| Some of you ever-inquisitive folks out there might be wondering about how the whole Girl Scout thing got started. Well here it is! A short little essay that I have made up on the spot to show you how it all began... The Story of Juliette Gordon Lowe Growing up in Savannah, Georgia, Juliette Gordon Lowe (nicknamed "Daisy") was a very active little girl. She enjoyed being outdoors and had a fondness for wildlife. She was educated very well and attended the finest schools. In 1886, Daisy married William Lowe. At the wedding ceremony, however, a grain of rice became lodged in her ear. The doctor who attempted to remove the rice caused it to become stuck in her ear even more. Daisy's ear became infected and caused her to be deaf in that ear. As for the marriage, it did not turn out happily. William died of paralysis in 1905, leaving his wealth to Daisy, who used it to travel around the world. While visiting Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, Daisy got interested in scouting. She decided that she would try to organize a thing of that nature for girls. In 1912, Daisy started her own troop in her hometown of Savannah. Her program picked up momentum, and the organization became the Girl Scouts of America in 1913, with Daisy serving as the president and then later becoming the offical founder. For fifteen years, Daisy put her efforts into making her program for girls a smashing success. Her emphasis on friendship, good citizenship, the outdoors, and other values, are still influencing girls everywhere today. In 1927, Juliette Gordon Lowe died of cancer in Savannah, Georgia, never to be forgotten by the millions of girls that her legacy has touched. So there you have it folks! The story of how the Girl Scouts were founded. Now if only we knew the story of how the Girl Scout cookie buisness got started! (Coming soon) |
