MORTON
<Grave unmarked/tombstone missing or illegible>
James, Died Oct. 26, 1892
From Streator Daily Free Press, Oct. 27, 1892:

 --James Morton was found dead in the city jail yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock, in which place he was confined while suffering an attack of temporary insanity.  For some time past he was boarded with the family of David Wilson, on Louis street, and the last two or three days he has acted very queerly, repeatedly trying to throw himself under the Santa Fe trains near No. 3 where he was employed gathering coal.  When asked why he did this Morton said the trains and the handcars were going to heaven, and as he was tired of playing the fiddle in saloons he thought he would join the heavenly choir.  He claimed the Lord told him what to do, and at such times he would not speak unless commanded to do so by the Lord.  He was walking about in the jail yesterday afternoon in apparently good health, and but a few minutes before his death had eaten a sandwich.  A little later he was seen lying on the floor, and when an officer entered the jail Morton was found to be dead.  The remains were taken in charge by Undertaker Howland and prepared for burial.
