My car ran longer this year than last year. However, I only ended up getting 6th or 7th place out of about 15 cars. So although I placed worse than last year (3rd), I lasted longer and did more damage than last year. We had a very dry June and July this year, so although they wet the track down before the derby, I was in the 2nd run and it was totally dry again! It was so incredible dusty that you couldn't see, and I could taste dirt all night! Since it was so dry, it made for a fast, hard hitting derby, and you'd have to see the car up close to believe it. The Passenger side was smashed in so far that it was apx. 1 foot from my right elbow! The battery, which mounts in the pass. side floorboard was shoved up under the dash. When it died, it would not start again. Even though I had four good tires on still, and didn't even lose the water this year, the engine was only firing on one cylinder after the race.

My 1954 Chevy Pickup Project Slowly but Surely...
The truck still looks pretty much like this however I have been working hard on the mechanical side. It is able to start up now!!! But, I found out the radiator had gotten damaged during storage and will need repaired. I now have the steering and brakes installed, and the radiator being repaired. I am very near the first test drive!! Even after that, there will be much more to do though, like wire the whole thing, and do body work.
About the Truck: I bought this truck in 1993 for $200. It ran, but hardly. I planned to get it running so I could drive it to my last few years of high school, but lacking knowledge and money, not much got accomplished. Then I went to college, got married, we had a baby, and it wasn't until last fall I finally got all the parts gather and began to try to make something out of it. I set it on a 2wd frame from a 79 Chevy 1/2 ton. The engine is a 350 I bought from my uncle that he took out of his 57 Chevy when it burned a couple valves. I had a valve job done. I know that it has a performance cam(but not sure what kind) , and has a Edelbrock Performer Intake, and Edelbrock 600CFM 4 bar. carb. For exhaust it has headers from Summit, and will have dual pipes straight back. The 79 frame will get apx. 10 inches cut out to shorten the wheelbase to match the 54 body. I plan to leave the '79 suspension stock since it will be a daily driver and I like the height. I am planning on painting it yellow, and getting chrome wheels. I love old trucks, Ford or Chevy, and am glad to recieve help or comments about this project through email or in our guestbook.
