First thing you need is a perfectly good car to destroy. Like this 90 Lumina with 210,000 miles on it. I paid $75 for this car in 1998 because of two blown head gaskets. I fixed it up, and after 2 years of driving it and about $2000 invested in parts just keeping it running, the engine started knocking. I knew it wasn't worth fixing again so I sold the wheels and a few parts off of it, and figured, might as well have some fun!!!

After selecting the car, the glass and plastic (headlights and trim) must be removed. In this picture David and I illustrate the easiest and fastest way to remove the glass. This is one of the more fun jobs! You also have to put the gas tank in the back seat, and the battery secured in the driver seat area. This is to eliminate explosions on impact!
Then you need a good pit crew. David, my main help is on the left, me in the middle, holding my little helper Mikayla, and my loving wife on the right who let me participate in the crazy event. It was 100 degrees out this day.

Off to the races.... Here we have the freshly painted derby car, and loading it onto the trailer. We had the best looking car there...so alot of people said. David and I wanted to advertise our custom quality paint job! We painted the black on with brushes! Most of the paint was old leftover paint. Also, notice the exhaust pipes I welded up that stick out of the hood--those are cool!

This is after two nights of the demo. derby. Do you think it is totaled? I figure I'll call my insurance agent! Actually, I hauled it to the scrapyard and got $30 for it. What a deal...it was worth the fun though.

This is what it is all about... apx 10-12 cars line up, the countdown ends, and the last car running wins. There are rules, but basically you just smash into all the other cars until their car dies, or yours. The main key is to hit with the rear. Hitting the front near the engine will do serious damage and you'll be the first one out. I had the advantage of front wheel drive in this match, but I had one of the smallest cars! By the time I was done the first night I had one tire completely gone and another flat. I was out when the car overheated since the radiator was busted.
