What does MICAG do? ·

  • MICAG has monthly meetings with Mental Health Services where issues can be discussed and relevant information exchanged.
  • Complaints can be raised and solutions developed.
  • MICAG assists members with workshops and education sessions. · Mental health resources may be accessed through MICAG ·
  • Informs its members about consumer rights and responsibilities. ·
  • Runs social and recreation activities. ·
  • Provides a venue for meetings, workshops, and activities which is at "Our Place".

 

Who can join MICAG ?

To be an active member you either must be receiving or have received in the past five years, treatment for a mental illness. This can be treatment from your GP or a private psychiatrist or psychologist as well as from the Community Mental Health Service. OR · You must be a the chief person providing nonprofessional care for a mentally ill person. People who are not consumers or carers can not be members of MICAG but may attend meetings and other activities by invitation. Membership of MICAG is free.

 

Why should I join MICAG? ·

  • You will learn more about mental health
  • You may learn tips for managing your illness from other consumers or from workshops
  • And you will always have an ear at the end of the phone line if you are having a bad day
  • You will develop skills in problem solving, negotiation, and public speaking
  • You will find out about workshops and opportunities (if there is a workshop out of town MICAG may be able to send you either free or with a large subsidy).
  • You will be kept in touch with all services and benefits which are available to people with a mental illness
  • BUT probably the most satisfying thing you will get from MICAG is to know that you are helping those even more unwell than yourself to get improved treatment and have their rights acknowledged both by Mental Health Professionals and the world at large.

 

How do I join?

Simply come along to a MICAG meeting (they are advertised at community Mental Health and at "Our Place"and are usually on the second Thursday of the month. Or you can drop a line to the secretary at PO Box 1070, Mount Isa.

Activities at "Our Place":

Mondays is the day when education workshops are conducted. Contact MICAG for for information and dates.

Tuesdays 10.30 - 12pm ART and CRAFT, women's group.

Thursdays 10.30 - 12 PM Care and Share which is our longest established group which provides support, practical help, friendship, or just conversation.

Friday 10.30 -12pm men's group

Mount Isa Consumer Advisory Group for Mental Health. . Tel 4743 0799. We are a volunteer organization so our phone is not manned all the time. You can however leave a message. MICAG has no paid staff and relies on consumers like you to provide volunteer support.
