Contrary to popular belief, drug addiction is not a particularly modern social evil and, like prostitution, was probably much more widespread in the 19th century than it is now, not least because it was cheap, legal and simple to buy drugs from your local pharmacist! Consequently cocaine was readily available and widely taken. This song explores the relative merits of cocaine and liquor and comes to the conclusion that cocaine is the more dangerous of the two. Whether this song was instrumental in Coca Cola's decision to remove coke (the real thing!) from their brew is entirely speculative.

There are a lot of versions of this song, including one by the Grateful Dead. Our version however comes from the Grant Brothers and Their Music recorded in 1928. It is sung by Andy Lamb.
