Essentially "ShadyGrove" is an American, old timey variant on the old British folksong "Seventeen Come Sunday". It's a cracking good number which has served us well in our live performances although it's proved difficult to get the timing exactly right in the studio, hence its conspicous absence from our latest CD. This recording comes from a gig we did at the headquarters of the English Folk Dance and Song Society in January 2003. We were playing in the basement while the London Caledonian Society were celebrating Burns' Night upstairs. If you listen carefully, you'll hear them dancing on the ceiling. This song is led by Richard Partridge and gives some idea of the atmosphere at a Mounthoolies performance. |
