Arbor Heights is one of seven West Seattle preschools run by parents
with support from South Seattle Community College. We provide classes for families with children from infancy to 5 years of age.
Co-op parents participate actively in their children's learning experience. In
addition to working once a week as a classroom aide, each parent takes
a job in running the school. Parents may volunteer to serve on the
governing board, run fundraisers, make play dough or to take one of several other
positions.
Members also have the opportunity to learn parenting and teaching
techniques through the parent education program provided by the college. The college offers several parenting courses every quarter which co-op parents are invited to attend.
A parent educator from the college also attends each preschool class once a week to support parents in their efforts to provide a nurturing learning environment for their children. In addition, the parent educator provides an hour of instruction during the monthly business meeting.
One of the most valuable benefits parents gain from joining a co-op preschool is the opportunity to meet other parents in their community who want to participate in their children's education. Close family bonds often form in classrooms where parents are helping to teach each other's children.
