PARENT EDUCATION CLASSES

The following Home and Family Life seminars are FREE for adult members of South Seattle Community College Cooperative Preschools. Attending one seminar fulfills the requirements for each quarter - but you may attend as many as you like. Partners welcome!

Non-members please call 764-5802 and leave a message with your name, the class you wish to attend, and your phone number. You will only be notified if the class is not open.

Adults only please unless noted on the class description.

PARENTS AS TEACHERS

How do we keep that water in the water table? What's the value in all this play? What do I say when I don't know who had it first? This class is a "must" if:
  • you are new to preschool
  • you are a veteran who has never taken this class
  • what you learned about toddlers isn't "working" with preschoolers
  • you just want "a booster"
  • your partner wants to understand the "co-op language"!
We'll have fun together going through the preschool day--learn why we do what we do Attend one only.

HEADING OFF TO SCHOOL 1

How can I determine my child's learning style? What does my child need to know to make a successful transition from preschool to Kindergarten? Is my child ready for Kindergarten? What should I look for when observing schools for my child? When does registration take place? These are questions that will be answered in this class. (Heading Off to School 2, A Kindergarten Fair, will be held on Saturday, January 11, from 9 am to Noon. It will feature representatives from public and private schools available to West Seattle families, and specifics of registration.)

GUIDANCE & DISCIPLINE TECHNIQUES

In this class, information on child growth and development and age appropriate behavioral expectations will be discussed, with an emphasis in setting and enforcing limits. Please attend the seminar that is age appropriate for you child.

HARVEST BOUNTY COOKING CLASS

Celebrate the crisp days of autumn as you measure, mix, grind, and season you way to a nourishing lunch. We'll talk about kitchen safety and discover how much fun cooking together can be. $6.00 per child with participating adult will provide your lunch and recipes. Class size is limited to 12. CPR FOR INFANTS AND CHILDREN

An instructor from the fire department will teach infant and child CPR. This is important information for all parents and teachers--don't put it off! Pre-registration is required for this seminar as enrollment is limited. A CPR card will be issued. Phone registration only (206) 248-3435. Anger is a powerful and scary emotion for both kids and parents. Learn some ways to manage and accept your strong feelings and how to model anger management for you child. We'll discuss temper tantrums (your child's and your own) and ways to facilitate the peaceful resolution of disagreements at home and preschool.

WHO'S TALKING WHO'S LISTENING

Do you ever feel that when you are speaking, no one is listening? And did you know that listening is just as important a part of communication as speaking? Participate in an interactive class where we will explore skills to help adults speak effectively to children so they will listen. And in turn how to really listen to what children are saying so that they will talk to you.

HOLIDAY GIFT MAKING

Help children learn what gift giving means by helping them create gifts to give friends and family. This class is designed so adult and child can work together to make gifts they will take with them at the end of the session. In addition, many ideas will be shared for use at a later time. POWER STRUGGLES

"I won't." "You can't make me." "You're not my boss!" "Five more minutes." Sound familiar? Parents and kids battle it out ever day--both determined to win. But power struggles aren't just about winning and losing. This class will focus on strategies to help avoid, diffuse, and resolve power struggles, while exploring emotions and needs behind daily hassles.
