Tides  For SATB Choir and Piano, 1997

Tides is set to SATB Choir or Choral with Piano Accompianment. The words are a contribution by Poet Shirlee Yantz. Shirlee's poem embodies the essence of swimming in an sea of emotion, and feeling the waves of our emotions moves us up and down throughout life. I wanted to create an etheral quality expressing the power of these words, and the emotions the poet put into them by developing the piece through long swelling lines. The opening consists of sopranos and altos in a intertwining duet whos lines swell up to a subtle climax, then calm. The piano interlude starts the build up of energy once again with the entrance of the who choir to dramatic climax that, once again, comes to a progessive slow calm. This ocean-like inconsistant swelling of the lines creates the impressions of standing at the ocean and watching the waves crash after both small and large climaxes.
