READING/WORD STUDY
We will be finishing up our unit on Myths, Folktales and Fables when we return from Christmas break, then begin our unit on Poetry. This year's poetry unit will go more in depth in reading a wide variety of poetry, analyzing and forming opinions, and doing some creative poetry writing. The unit will culminate with a "Coffee House" style poetry reading celebration. I will be asking for help with that in the way of refreshments - and you, the parents, will be invited!
As we continue with our Word Trek vocabulary study, I will be incorporating more spelling techniques to improve spelling skills. Although we do not use the Words Their Way program that is being used in the students' writing classes, I will be working on word sorts in a similar fashion.
Nightly reading, recording and response writing will continue to be an integral part of our reading program throughout the year. I am seeing a lot of improvement in the students' abilities to truly pause and reflect on what they have read.
MATH
We've had a full plate in Math so far this year. The students are learning to think more critically and creatively when solving math problems, and figuring out the best strategies to use. The 7 Steps to Problem Solving is becoming second nature to many of the students!
Our first 3 days in January will be spent working on a mid-year review/assessment. This will give the students a chance to use what they have learned this year, and help me know what areas I need to work on with individual students.
