Past Perfect - Chapter 4: Good Byes
By: Moonraven

Pan got back to Capsule Corps in time to see Trunks flying off. Pan can sense his enormous power as he zoomed off into the sky. Wow, that was WAY impressive. I wish I could generate that much power.... The thought trailed off as she realized that she shouldn't be able to feel his ki at all. Shock and fear weld up inside her as knowledge sank into her mind - Trunks was not wearing his shield. Why? He can't be wanting the androids to find him? A small gasp escape Pan as she realized that Trunks did want the androids to find him. He was going to confront the androids today.

"NOOOOO, Damn it!" Pan yelled into the sky. "Trunks, come back." She wasn't sure if she should be pissed or scared that he left to fight the androids. She knew that he DID destroy the androids. He went back to the past to tell everyone that, so she shouldn't be scared. But still....Pan couldn't shake the feeling that something will go wrong.

As Pan contemplate following him, she heard a voice said firmly, ::No, Pan. You must stay with my mom:: It was Trunk's voice. Pan looked around her to see if somehow he was around here, talking to her. She was alone.

"TRUNKS? Trunks, let me come with you, PLEASE!" She pleaded, looking wildly around her. "I want to help you. I don't want you to do this alone!" Pan shouted. Her mind was reeling with pictures of him in battle, hurt and alone. She couldn't bear it if something were to happen to him.

::I'm more than capable of taking out those blasted androids by myself.:: Came the firm voice again. ::Pan, you have to stop this. I can't fight the androids if you keep yelling into my mind and projecting discouraging mental pictures :: Yelling into his mind? What was he talking about? And how was he talking to her? ::Apparently, we've bonded mentally.:: She can almost hear him sigh. ::I'll explain more later but, please, for now I need you to try and keep your mind off me. I can't fight if I worry about you. Promise me, Pan.::

Pan was dumbfounded. Bonded! Now she recalled some of Vegeta's lectures about customs and rituals of Saiyan-jins. But how? When? Another light bulb came on in her head, that's when they fell out of the sky.

::That's right:: Came the mental voice of Trunks. ::There's not time for more explanations now Pan. Please promise me you'll stay with mom and keep your mind off me.::

"I don't want to Trunks, but I'll try." She sniffed. "I...I...Trunks...I..." She wanted to tell him that she loved him and to be careful, but she can't bring herself to say it.

::I know, Pan:: Came his thoughts gravely. ::I think I feel the same, I don't know, but we need to talk when I get back:: Even mentally, his voice was so calm and strong.

::Promise me you'll come back safe:: She sent her thoughts to him.

After some hesitation, ::I promise:: and she didn't feel or hear anything else. It was as if he turned off the radio. She tried not to dwell on it for fear of distracting him. Part of her was screaming with joy at the thoughts of him returning her feelings. But part of her wanted to cry because he's out there facing great danger alone. She told herself to relax and took several deep breaths. After all, he already beat the androids and Cell in her time....surely it's no different here. Pan walked into the Capsule Corp building with mixed feelings, looking for Bulma. She found her in the kitchen, hunched over the counter in pain. Pan rushed over to her side.

"Bulma. Are you feeling alright?" Pan asked softly, putting her hand on the older woman's shoulder. "Would you like to lie down?"

"Yes, I think that'll be best." Bulma whispered. She looked up at Pan and smile weakly. "Pan, I think it's time."

Pan frowned, "No Bulma. You've been working too hard, that's all. You just need to rest." She said calmly to Bulma, but inside she was frantic. What do I do? What do I do? Okay, calm down, Pan or Trunks will feel it. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself and help Bulma to her room.

Bulma's head came up suddenly, she stared straight ahead and smiled. "Vegeta." She whispered.

Pan looked to where Bulma was looking but saw no one. Kami, Bulma's getting delirious, she must get her to bed.

Bulma straighten up and tried to walk to the empty space that was 'Vegeta'. Pan held her back. "Bulma, we must get you to bed." She urged.

Bulma paused, as if listening to something no one can hear but her. She smiled again at 'Vegeta' and allow Pan to take her to her room.

Pan helped Bulma get into her bed and tucked her in. "Did you eat breakfast? Would you like me to bring you something?" Pan asked sitting on the side of the bed.

"No dear." She told Pan but continue to look at one corner of her room. It was giving Pan the chills. She's never thought much about ghosts before but now she wasn't so sure.

"Would you like to meet my Vegeta?" Bulma asked Pan suddenly, smiling and looking a bit stronger.

"Er....the....dead Vegeta?" Pan wasn't sure she wanted to but said, "Um...sure." anyway, somewhat brightly to Bulma. She'll humor Bulma if it'll make her feel better. Bulma gestured to the corner that has been occupying her attention. Pan felt the hair in the back of her neck rise and she reluctantly looked towards the corner.

"WHAAA..." Pan fell off the side of the bed and scrambled to her feet. A smug looking Vegeta stood a few feet from her, arms crossed, dressed fully in his blue and white battle suit. "V..V..Vegeta?" She stammered, hair standing on ends.

"You have Kakarott's blood." He stated, nodding to her. He looked about the same as the Vegeta in her time. Actually, he didn't look dead at all. If she didn't know better, she might even think they're the same. He cocked his head to one side and smirked at her, "Who would have thought that my blood and his would bond." He shook his head ruefully. "He has the strength to do what needs to be done but you need to clear your mind as well or he'll be endangered." He told her then added with some regret, "Look after Trunks for us. I've failed him but maybe he can now find peace and happiness."

He then walked towards the bed and held out his hand to Bulma. To Pan's surprise, Bulma, looking 20 years younger and smiling from ear to ear , put her hand in his and rose from the bed. The couple turned to her and Bulma smiled kindly to Pan. "The time machine is ready. Apparently you discovered the loose wires and nothing else is amiss. It's time for me to go, Pan. Please be happy for me. I know that I am. On the dresser, there is a hologram message for Trunks, please make sure he gets it. Tell Trunks not to be sad for us, for Vegeta and I are one again." Bulma blew Pan a kiss and the two figures disappear.

"BULMA!" Pan called after them. But they were gone. Pan didn't know what to feel. She was still shocked from seeing a dead saiyan and now Bulma was gone as well. What was she to do now? What would Trunks say? She looked over to the bed and saw the still form of Bulma. She looked at peace and completely happy. A small smile tuning the corner of her lips. Maybe this was for the best. Pan thought to herself. Finally, Bulma's pains are gone and she can now be united with her beloved Vegeta. Pan sighed and cover Bulma before going back to the kitchen. She doesn't feel like eating now but needed to keep busy to keep her mind from tangling with Trunks. She cleared up the kitchen and cleaned the dishes. She inhaled sharply as she realized she needed to call her home and ran out to the time machine.

"This is Pan, come in." Pan spoke into the microphone. "Hello! Come in." She hoped everything is set up because without Bulma, she may be stuck here. Is that so bad, Pan? She asked herself. Trunks is here, and you love him. Can't you make a life here with him? Stop it, Pan! She told herself and tore her thoughts away from Trunks.

"Pan?" Came a distant voice over the speakers. "You're late!" Bulma scolded her. Bulma....at the sound of Bulma's voice, Pan broke down and cried. The realization hit her like a brick wall. Her sobs can be heard by her family and friends on the other side.

Gohan took the radio from Bulma and asked roughly, "What's wrong Pan? Are you okay?"

"Daddy!" She wailed. Sobs raking her body making it hard to speak. Gohan was now besides himself with worry.

"Panny, tell me what's wrong! Where're the others? Trunks? Bulma?" Gohan stubbornly refuse the relinquish the radio to Bulma who was trying to reach pass his back and fending arms.

"Daddy..." Pan continued to cry. "They're ...hiccup.....gone...hiccup...wahhhhh."

"Gone? Gone where?" Vegeta and Gohan said at the same time.

Pan at this time was sensing confusion and uncertainty that she's sure was coming from Trunks. She gulped down a sob and try to control herself. She took long slow breaths and concentrate on blocking herself from him. How the heck is she suppose to do that? It would never do if he finds out about Bulma now. He must be clear headed when he fight those evil androids.

"PAN!" Everyone was yelling into the radio now.

"I'm here. I'm sorry, I'm okay now." She spoke trying to sound calm. "Trunks is out fighting the androids and he won't let me go with him." Tears falls slowly down her cheeks. "Bulma...Bulma is with...Vegeta." Pan said simply because that's where she is and it's much better than saying 'She's dead'.

Vegeta and Bulma looked at each other. They understood fully the implication of that statement.

"I saw him." Pan continued numbly. "He came for her. Bulma was so happy, she looked so young and carefree." More tears fell. "I don't know what to do....They want me to take Trunks back with me when I return home. I don't think he'll come." Her voice was barely audible. "What should I do?" She asked forlornly.

There was a few seconds of dead silence. No one spoke. The only sound was Pan's quiet sobs. "Daddy? What do I do now?" She asked.

"Pan, does Trunks know about Bulma?" Vegeta's voice came over the speaker.

"No, he left before......before she did." She said sadly. "There's a shield over the compound. He can't feel our ki here so he doesn't know. The only danger is me. I have to keep calm and not think a about it or he'll find out! It's so very hard, I've never done anything like this before. Vegeta, I don't know how to keep him out." The last part was almost a wail.

Vegeta let the message sink in then looked from his mate to Gohan. Bulma looked like she understood but Gohan was still pacing and pulling on his hair in frustration.

"Mental bonds are hard to block, Pan, but not impossible." Vegeta said, he's the only one that can help her cope now it seems. And doing so, he can possibly keep his son safe. This he can do for Trunks. He heard Gohan exclamation as he finally grasped the full meaning of the conversation.

"If he hadn't found out, you're doing okay. Keep it up. Trunks cannot be dist -...." He was interrupted by Pan's scream.

Trunks was thrown into a building and Pan can see fire and smoke everywhere. She felt pain in her arms and knew that Trunks was hurt. Did she do this? Should she shut him out? What if he's really hurt?

"VEGETA!" She screamed. "Trunks' hurt! I can see it, I can feel it! I have to help him...what do I do?" She was frantic.

"You can close him out now! When you initiated the link, a door opened. You have to close THAT door, Pan! Try to recall the sensation. Close the link! All this emotion is hurting him! He may not be able to tell exactly what's going on but he can FEEL you. You need to clear your mind NOW!" Damn, Vegeta thought, the link was more deep than he thought. How the hell did that happen so fast?

"I Can't! I can feel the pain!" Pan continued to scream. "He needs me! I have to go!"

"NO, PAN!" Gohan yelled into the radio. "You're not strong enough!" Gohan remembered the androids. They were not as strong as Cell but stronger than Pan. She's never had any strenuous training, not any that would prepare her for this duo. "PAN!"

Pan was gone. The pain she was feeling left her breathless but she has to get to Trunks. Senzu beans! She has some in her pack. She grabbed her pack and flew off towards the flickering ki she felt in the distant. Hold on Trunks, I'm coming!

"No...Pan...stay away..." Came Trunks' weak reply. He no longer sounded strong or calm. He sounded sad and tired. Pan shut him out of her mind. If he can't link with her, he can't know what she has in mind. Stubbornly, Pan flew on.

"This is NOT good!" Gohan paced furiously. Videl tried to calm her husband but to no avail. She was worried too, but if they were all to loose their heads, what would happen? "How can this happen? They weren't suppose to bond! This can't be happening!" Gohan fumed to no one in particular.

Bulma tried to raise Pan again but it was no use. Pan was clearly not there. She turned to look at Vegeta and was appalled to find that he actually looked worried. The stony façade was gone, his trademark look of irritation was replaced by worried frowns. "This is NOT good." Vegeta repeated what Gohan had just said. "This is why we don't allow emotions in battles! Why we don't say good byes or talk of upcoming fights with mates. This is NOT good."

Bulma knew Vegeta was not the sentimental type and emotional displays was a disgust to him. She thought it was the way he was brought up, having no one to share love and tenderness with. Being the Prince of all Saiyan-Jins, a warrior race, was also another factor. What macho warrior would kiss their mate good bye before battle? She has never thought though, that mental and emotion bonds would interfere with their performance. She should have known, being with him all these years. Bulma mentally kicked herself and walked over to her mate. To Vegeta's surprise and chagrin, she kissed his cheek. "Woman, what's the matter with you?" He frown some more. She just smiled and shook her head silently.

"All we could do now is wait and pray that they are strong enough to beat this.." Bulma sighed.

**************** ****************** ***********
Pan locked on to Trunks' signature ki and zoomed in. She can see smoke and hear the explosions not too far off. Trunks' ki is also decreasing. Hurry, Pan. She urged herself and powered up. She can travel twice as fast as super saiyan. Trunks, hang on, please.

When she got to the scene, Pan saw that most of the building were leveled. Fires and smoke were everywhere, it was hard to see clearly. She had to get closer to the ground. She can hear screams from people trying to get away from the nightmare. Trunks' ki was just off to the left and she made her way on foot towards him.

Trunks was standing with his back toward a half destroyed building. He was battered and bleeding. He had his sword in his right hand and using his body to shield a figure sitting on the floor by his feet. It was Jinai and she looked more terrified than hurt. In front of him was #17. The android was barely recognizable. His left arm was gone and so was his hair and most of his clothing. He was bloodied and Pan can see the wires and metal that made up his insides. He was advancing on Trunks with an energy ball rapidly building in his remaining hand. Pan sense the energy and knew that this was meant to be the killing blow.

"NOOOOO!" Pan screamed as she powered up more and with speed she didn't know she had, she appeared between Trunks and 17. Her quickest attack was the Masenko and she threw that quickly to intercept the android's blast. She didn't have much time to gather her energy for the attack so it wasn't as strong as she would like it to be. Pan send out another surge as she try to hold her beam and push it towards 17. From behind her, Pan felt Trunks gather his energy and his Masenko joined hers. Their efforts pushed 17's beam back and with another surge from Trunks, drove the blasts full force into the android.

The explosion threw both Trunks and Pan off balance and she careened into him, knocking him off his feet. Debris were flying everywhere as the force of the impact destroy more things around them. Many seconds went by and Trunks could do nothing but cursed himself for allowing this to happen. Both women he cared for are now deep in this mess with him.

When it was over and he was able to look up and found that #17 was now nothing but bits and pieces. Jinai was practically underneath him, apparently he toppled over her as he fell. She stirred and looked up at him. "Trunks...are.... you .... alright?" She asked between gasps.

He smiled gravely at her, "I'm fine Jinai, and you?" He helped her as she struggled to her feet. "Yeah. I think you and Pan absorbed most of the impact. I'm okay." Jinai said as she try to get her wind back.

PAN! He thought frantically, where is she? He found her a few feet behind him. Pan was lying on the ground, and out of her super saiyan transformation. He rushed over to her and turned her over. "Pan! Please, Pan, answer me." He felt tears blinding him and brushed them away fiercely. "Pan!" he called desperately. "Please don't leave me!" He can still feel her energy but she was weak. "You little idiot! I told you to stay home! Why didn't you listen?" He held her to his chest and rested his cheek on her hair. "Why didn't you listen?"

Pan stirred in his arms, "This is the thanks I get for saving your butt?" she asked weakly.

Trunks gasped and stared down into her eyes. "Pan!" He was so happy to see her conscious he couldn't find anything to say.

"Yeah, I'll be okay." Pan answered his silent question. She winced as she try to get up. "Hehehe, well maybe not." She chuckled. Pan reached into her pouch and pulled out a small cloth bag. She handed it to Trunks, "Senzu beans. I brought them for you but I guess I can use one too." She attempted a smile.

"You crazy girl." Trunks muttered as he struggled with the bag. He was more hurt than he thought. When he saw Pan, all thoughts of his own pain left him, but now they returned full force.

"Here, let me." Jinai was not badly hurt since Trunks took most of the blows. In her stubbornness, she had inadvertently force Trunks to shield and protect her when he should have been destroying the enemy. If she wasn't there, she knew Trunks would have fared much better. "I'm sorry, Trunks." She said as she handed him a bean and another to Pan. "I should have left when you told me to." She looked down, mortified, "This is all my fault. You wouldn't have been so hurt if it hadn't been for me."

"Forget it, Jinai. We are all okay. That's all that mattered." He assured her. The bean was a miracle. Instantly they both felt better. Trunks continued to cradle Pan in his arms and Jinai sadly turned and walked away.

"Jinai." He called and she turned to look at him. "I'm....sorry too." He said. He doesn't have to say for what, they both knew. The reason was held protectively in his arms.

Jinai smiled regretfully at Trunks and gave him a small wave good bye. She turned and walked toward the celebrating group of people.

Trunks stood up and help Pan to her feet. They looked with wonder at the large crowd that gathered around them dancing and shouting with joy. For the first time in his life, Trunks felt completely at peace. He looked down at the slip of a girl that was held in the circle of his arms and smiled. She smiled back at him, her dark brown eyes luminous, black hair flowing softly about her upturned face. Trunks frowned suddenly, recalling the very same image haunting his dreams for years. How was it that he didn't see it before?

He took a sharp breath, "You're the girl in my dreams." He stared at her, astonished.

Pan smiled brighter and hugged him. "Took you long enough to figured it out! Your mother found out the minute she saw me." Bulma....At the thought of his mother, her face fell. Oh Kami, how will she tell him?

"I already knew." He told her gravely. "You're terrible at hiding your feelings." He pulled her to him and held her close. "Thank you for being there for her." He whispered into her hair.

"It's all my fault you're hurt." She sobbed. "Vegeta said to shut you out and control my feelings. But I couldn't even do that! I make a lousy saiyan."

"You talked to father?" Trunks asked, surprised. He gently held her from him and looked into her face. "He didn't freak when he found out we're bonded?" He looked skeptical. "I bet YOUR dad freaked."

"I don't know if my dad freaked, but both your dads took it well." She smiled at his incredulous expression.

"BOTH my dads? What do you mean?"

"Your dad came to take your mom away. They asked that I take good care of you and to let you know that they are very happy. Your mom was so radiant, Trunks. Vegeta was the world to her." She looked closely at him, "Trunks, there's something else I have to discuss with you." She looked around the noisy crowd as if hinting that they should leave.

Trunks took her arms and guide her into the sky. They zoom off, leaving disappointed people calling after them. They flew to Capsule Corps in silent. When they got there, Trunks immediately went to his mother's room. Pan lingered in the yard by the time machine, wanting to give him some privacy. After about half an hour, Trunks came down, his eyes were red from crying. He looked so lost Pan felt the ache deep in her heart, it was so painful she gasped and clutched at her chest. Trunks saw Pan's distress and came towards her. He took her in his arms and held her tightly to him.

After some time has passed, Trunks broke their embrace and tilted her face up to meet his. "What are we going to do with you now, Panny?" He asked softly.

"Wh...what do you mean?" She asked, afraid that he'll ship her back home and she'll never see him again. "What about us?" She asked mournfully.

Trunks looked away and took a deep breath. "Pan, there can be no us." Pan's heart broke. "We are living in different times, there can be no future for us. I......have to send you home." Trunks turned back to look at her and she can see the agony in his eyes, feel it in her heart.

"Your mom and dad told me to take you with me. They don't want you to stay here. It was Bulma's dying wish. Please, Trunks. Come back with me." She pleaded, her heart in her eyes. "I promised Bulma. Please!"

Trunks turned away abruptly, tears stinging his eyes. "How can I leave these people? What kind of man would I be if I run away from hardship?" He paused, not looking at her. "I would love to be someplace else, Pan, especially with you. But how can I live with myself knowing that I've deserted the earth and it's people?"

"Trunks, you've spend all of your life fighting for the earth. You've saved the world. It's your time to rest. No one would grudge you peace now that you've delivered them." Pan reasoned. "You're not running away. You've already destroyed the threats." She moved to face him and said, "I'm not leaving without you." Then added softly, looking at her shoes, "I can't live without you."

Trunks drew a shaky breath and pulled her roughly against his chest. He buried his face in her neck, murmuring her name over and over. Pan clung to him, not wanting to ever let go. A lump formed in her throat as she was pressed against the hardness of his body. His intoxicating male scent was filling her nostrils and she loss all coherent thoughts. She reached up and pulled his head away from her neck. She brushed her lips against his lightly at first and then with increasing pressure. Trunks caught his breath, surprise at her bravado. Her actions fueled his own hunger and he too deepened the kiss, his mouth sliding hungrily across hers and she clung desperately to him, her arms wrapping around his neck. Her knees went weak but Trunks kept her firmly pressed against him. She lost all sense of propriety as her hunger for him overwhelmed them both. His tongue entwined with hers and the world was forgotten as they lost themselves in their needs.

Slowly Trunks ended the kiss. His hands came up to cup her face and he gazed solemnly into her flustered brown eyes. They were both breathing raggedly and it took a while before Trunks found the ability to speak.

"Pan..." He closed his eyes, unwilling to see the hurt and dejection in her eyes when he say what he has to say.

Pan sucked in her breath suddenly. She had just remember the hologram message from Bulma to Trunks. Maybe it'll convince him to go with her. "Trunks, your mom left you a message in the capsule on her dresser. She said you must see it." She said urgently.

Trunks frowned. "It can wait." He said somewhat distractedly.

"No Trunks. Please, see that first. If you still won't come with me then . . . . .well. . . . . we'll talk later." She gently nudged him towards Bulma's room.

Trunks sighed as he resignedly walked to his mother's room to fetch the message. What can be so important? Why would they want him to leave?

When Trunks came back out again, Pan was pacing uncertainly by the time machine. She looked up expectantly as he walked towards her. "Did you find it?" She asked.

"Uh huh." He said and produced the little capsule. He pressed the button and toss it a couple of feet from them. With a loud "boom", the capsule was gone to be replaced by a hologram of Bulma.

"Hello Trunks." The figure of Bulma started, "If you're seeing this, I must have already gone with your father. You would have defeated the androids, I have no doubts of that. You are so strong now, my son. So much like your father. You may not believe this but he is very proud of you. We both are." The translucent hologram hesitated briefly, "Trunks, I'm sorry you've had a hard life. But now that the struggle is over, I want you to go with Pan. There's no one here for you now, my love, at least there, you'll have people who'll understand your powers, and people who'll love you. I don't want you to be alone, Trunks. I made Pan promise to take you. You must go with her. I have seen it, you and she are destined to be together. Do this as my last request to you, my dying wish. Please, Trunks, leave this place. In exactly 30 minutes after you've seen this message, Capsule Corps will be destroyed."" Both Pan and Trunks gasped at this bit of information. "I do not want my inventions to fall into the wrong hands. The time machine at the least must be destroyed. You must take Pan's machine, ours will self-destruct in 30 minutes." Both Pan and Trunks stared in disbelieve at the figure calmly giving instructions. "If you feel the need to watch over this world, Trunks, maybe Bulma can help you with some kind of communication device. But I want you to leave here and go with Pan. It's time you have a life of your own. Good bye my son. I love you with all my being." Then she flickered and disappeared.

Pan stared at the space where the hologram figure stood, now empty. Her mouth hung open, too surprised to say or do anything. She glanced over at Trunks and saw that he had the same reaction. She silently place her small hand in his and patiently waited for him to come around.

Tears formed in Trunks' eyes as he watched the figure of his mother. He was glad that she was happy now but he was also angry that she left him. He loved her so much. All this fighting was for her. It was to make the world better for her more than anything. He had watched his mother suffer all his life and now that the cause was gone, she didn't even get to enjoy the peace. This is way too much for him. So many turbulent thoughts crowded his mind and he couldn't think, couldn't decide. He groaned, falling to his knees in frustration, not realizing that as he did so, he dragged the small figure whose hand was firmly clasped in his down with him.

Pan struggled to sit up after the collision with the ground. It was harder than she thought. She was experiencing not only her pain and loss but Trunks' as well. She shook her head to clear the nauseating sensation that was threatening to consume her. Trunks seemed oblivious of her misfortune and continued to struggle with his grief silently.

Time passed and Trunks remained silent and still next to her. Pan was beginning to get nervous. Has it been 30 minutes yet? "Er....Trunks?" She ventured tentatively. "We have to go." She looked nervously about her. "If this place blows and we're not out of here, we may not be able to leave at all."

Pan's voice snapped Trunks out of his trance and he looked up questioningly at her.

"It might destroy my time machine and then we'll be stuck here." She replied. And since he did not move, "Please Trunks, at least take me home and we'll talk about you returning later." She silently wish that he would not want to return. She was yanking at his arm now, "Please, let's go."

The time machine took to the air seconds before the rumbling at Capsule Corps was heard miles away. Trunks and Pan watched in dismay as the familiar building was obliterated and only dust and debris remained. The scene winked out and shimmers of light and colors filled the screen. What seemed like seconds later, a perfectly constructed and well maintained Capsule Corps greeted them.

A/N: Thanks again everyone! I'm sorry I really suck at fight scenes so I kept it at a minimum. Chapter five should be out in about a week. Please let me know how you liked it.
