"I am thinking of aurochs and angels, the secret of durable pigments, prophetic sonnets, the refuge of art." ~ Vladimir Nabokov
The funny thing about tattoos is, you either love them or hate them. I fall into the former category. Generally the biggest deciding factor in getting tattoos is its permanency... they just don't come off. New laser technology comes much closer than the old burn & scar method, but still is not 100% effective.
The other factor of course is the pain. Yes, they hurt. As I like to say however, it only hurts until the pain goes away.

I got my first tattoo for my 18th birthday in the Philippines. I've always been fond of dragons, and I guess it's a little cliche, but I admire the mythical strength and beauty they represent. This one took about 5 hours, and was done by a good friend of mine named Ted Northrup.
I got my second tattoo in 1992 in Italy. The fallen angel is based on a combination of the Swan Song label from Led Zeppelin and the Angel Michael who defeated Satan who is himself falling from heaven. I've always gone my own way without much regard for the status quo, and have on occasion been persecuted for that. The fallen angel represents being removed from society's bonds and surviving individually. The sword in his hands gives him the strength to do so. This tattoo took about 14 hours spread over a weekend. It was done by Ted as well.
I got my third tattoo during a visit to Australia in 1996. I had already designed it and the trip provided the perfect excuse for getting it. It took about 2 hours.
I designed this tat with my background in mind. The Japanese letters (called Kanji) stand for my four keys to success. Starting at the top and going clockwise they are Strength, Confidence, Power, and Determination. The green Celtic pattern represents my mostly Scot/Irish background. My birthstone, the star sapphire, is in the middle. The Indian symbols represent my bit of Choctaw (Cherokee) heritage. The water and fire meeting at the Ying/Yang symbol represents my martial arts background. Finally, the black symbolic rose thorns are meaningful only  to myself.

As a patron and admirer of skin art, feel free to send me your pictures of tats you may have with any comments you'd like to add. I always enjoy seeing work from other people. As recipients know, they are addictive, so don't be surprised to eventually see more work on me end up here.
