| We all like to think of ourselves as open minded. But, only those whose experiences have broadened their perspectives can truly be open. Think of this ~ a wealthy young man is raised in a prominent family. He grows up to take over his father's company. The closest he ever comes to hardship is passing a homeless vet near Times Square while his limo looks for a shortcut to the Symphony to listen to Brahms. Now, is this young man open minded? Sure, and maybe Mark Furhman will be the next guest speaker for the NAACP. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| My point is, our lives and how they have evolved directly affect the way we think, act, and write. The following is not a resume or a sob story. It is merely meant to give you a small insight into what lies behind some of the things you may read. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I was born in the oldest city in the United States in 1971. St. Augustine, Florida is the alleged home of the legendary fountain of youth. I like to attribute this fact to my youthful appearance. Getting carded at PG-13 movies isn't all it's cracked up to be by the way. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I'm the youngest of 8, with my oldest brother over two decades older. Because of the age differences, I grew up with only three children in the household; myself, and a brother and sister, twins, two years older. With occupations ranging from policeman to convict, my oldest siblings provided a wide range of both positive and negative experiences I could draw from without actually having to make the same mistakes they did. Anytime you can draw from other's ordeals as well as your own it's a benefit. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| My father retired from carpentry when I was very young, so my childhood was spent gathering my own chronicle of adventures. Our family moved all over the western half of the US trying new things, from commercial fishing in the Gulf of Mexico to logging in Northern Idaho to most things in between. In my brief lifetime I've lived in a range of homes from a log cabin with no amenities, to a 14th century castle owned by a mafia kingpin in Southern Italy. Each with a value all their own. This gambit has given me an affinity for cultures as well as an easy ability to make new friends. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| At 15 I started my own career with my first job as a disc jockey at 1340 AM in Sweethome, Oregon. I graduated from High School at 16, and by 17 was travelling the planet as a broadcast journalist. Since then I've been to more than a dozen countries and have lived through super typhoons, a government takeover, military curfews, earthquakes from 1 to 7.7, a small war, and the 3rd largest volcanic eruption in history. I've been stationed in the Philippines, Italy, and Japan. Now I reside around the D.C. area covering the Pentagon. These kinds of things have altered my perspective just a tad. They've not only given me a healthy respect for life, but they've also taught me not to fear its end. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| At 18 I got married. A little young for that, but it lasted 11 years before ending in divorce. During that time I was granted two contributions to perfection, a son and a daughter. Parents out there know what I mean when I say that none of us truly know what life is until we contribute to it. Over the last 14 years my son has shown me the meaning behind the thousands of little things the rest of us seem to take for granted. My two daughters constantly change my perspective. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I'm now married to a beautiful young woman who has truly changed my life. Sharon is the soul mate of a person who spent his life refusing to believe real love could exist. She and her daughter Alexandra have added immeasurably to my life. Here we are. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
