The Addicks Seal 4.75m Euell Deal 4/7/01 The Addicks have broken their transfer record by signing Jason Euell on a five year contract from Wimbledon. This beats the previous transfer record of 4 million pounds that was spent on classy Claus Jensen last summer. Euell has played at England under 21 level and is a striker, capable of playing in other attacking positions such as on the right of midfield. Chairman Richard Murray said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Jason. Just as we are building a new stand to cope with the extra fans who want to come and see us at the Valley, Alan is continuing to build a side that can prosper in the Premiership." My thoughts: Euell is a pacy striker capable of upsetting a defence and he brings back memories of our friend Carl Leaburn. However, I don't think he has sufficient skill to warrant the 4.75m price. My reason for saying this is that his scoring rate at Premiership level is at best mediocare. Hopefully with better service from Jensen, Kinsella and alike, he will have more opportunities than at Wimbledon. As Cubishley stated, Euell will create competition for places in the team, but at 4.75m lets hope that's not all he creates.

Newton goes North 6/8/01 Shaun Newton has finally been sold by Alan Curbishley to Wolves for what could be a deal worth 1.15m depending on appearances for his new club. Newton is one of a few old skool players such as Steve Brown and Richard Rufus who have been with Charlton since turning proffessional, rising through the Charlton youth ranks. He made 285 appearances for the Addicks since his debut in the first team in 1993 at the age of 17. He is a pacy right midfielder/winger who is capable of causing havoc against many a defence. However, after helping the Addicks to promotion on two occasions, Newton has failed to cement his place in the first team making only a handful of appearances during the 2000/2001 season. He was put on the transfer list at his own request. Alan Curbishley said: "I reluctantly placed Shaun on the transfer list at his own request last year due to his frustration at a lack of first team football. Once Wolves made their bid it was apparent that Shaun was interested and, coupled with the fact that he only had one year left on his contract, I decided that I couldn't stand in his way. He has been a great servant to Charlton Athletic over the last eight years and has been heavily involved in our success. I personally would like to wish him every success in his new career, as I'm sure would everyone at the club." My thoughts: Newton is one of the most loyal players we have seen over the last ten years and on top form he is capable of mixing it with the best. However, Shaun very rarely reaches the form he is capable of producing and this inconsistancy has left him floundering in the reserves. He is a good player, but not quite good enough to play on a weekly basis at Premiership level and as such it makes sense for Shaun to move on. I thank him for his many great moment in a Charlton shirt, especially when he scored our seventh (crucial) penalty in the play-off final against Sunderland in 1998!!
Kinsella and Robbo will miss beginning of Season 4/7/01 Mark Kinsella and John Robinson will miss the first few games of the season due to a hernia and cartilage problems respectively. Kinsella should be out for six weeks whilst Robinson will be out for four weeks. My thoughts: These are two terrible injury blows for the club. As club captain, Kinsella will be hard to replace but as long as Parker and Jensen stay injury free, we should be alright in the centre of midfield. However, with Kishishev out, the injury to Robinson could be catastrophic. It looks like Stuart and Salako will play out wide but after that we have no extra cover. To combat this, Curbishley has signed 33 year old Gavin Peacock on an extended loan.
