Flaming River Vega-Style Manual Box Kit
FR1495 w/6.5 offset arm includes:
New Pitman Arm
New Vega performance box
U-joint adapter
Shaft extension
The manual steering box kit is a direct replacement for power and larger manual boxes for most GM applications. This compact steering box weighs only 12 lbs. Reduces front end weight by up to 45 lbs.

I found the box reduced weight by about 30 pounds from the
stock power-steering setup.  It really is very easy to install.

My
original setup was the typical heavy-as-hell power steering box and pump. The much smaller and lighter Vega-style box bolts right up to the stock mounting holes in the frame.  The pitman arm bolt is removed from the center-line with a impact gun.  A couple hammer taps breaks the pitman arm free.

This kit re-uses the stock steering shaft,  however, the stock
rag-joint is sliced off. The supplied shaft extension is inserted into the stock hollow shaft.  I had to cut the new shaft piece down after eyeing up how everything fit together. A hole is then drilled through the two shafts and a bolt is inserted to lock the two shafts together.

The
u-joint connects the shaft extension to the new box.

The steering feel is good, but a lot more effort is required to make sharp turns at low speeds.

With this mod and changing from 16X8 front wheels to draglite skinnies, I picked up almost 2 tenths in the quarter mile.
