Once upon a time...
I was looking through the Albuquerque classified paper (Quick Quarter). I think it was on Friday 12-01-00. Anyway, on this particular day, I realized how much I was overwhelmed by school and how depressing my life of nothing but schoolwork had become. I remember thinking, 'I only have 2 weeks left of the semester, I really hope I survive'. I didn't want to face the reality of all the final projects I had to do and all the final exams I had to prepare for. So I was looking through the list of cars in the classifieds and letting my mind wander and dream about a life of owning the cars that got my attention.
The story goes, that my brother and I really wanted a project car, preferably an old
Chevy with a 350 engine, but in New Mexico those are hard to come by, because no one wants to give up such a car. We had discussed which model of Chevrolet we liked best and, coming to the conclusion that they were all equally hard to come by, we decided that we were both fans of the Monte Carlo.
Well, I wasn't working at the time, because, if you haven't figured it out by now, I was really busy with school and so I wasn't really in the position to be buying a car. But, while I was looking through the paper I found several Monte Carlos (very unusual), but they were all overpriced (not unusual), except one.
I told my brother, "Hey check out this ad". He said, "Do you think we should get it?" I said, "I don't know neither of us are really in the position to be buying a car since we're both so busy in school and I'm not working right now." Then he said, "Well we should at least check it out." Which I knew meant we'll probably buy it anyway. So I called the number on the ad and found that it hadn't been sold yet. So the next day, as soon as we woke up (Saturday afternoon) we went to check it out. As you can see from the stage 1 pictures, we had found a beautiful car.
It turned out to be at a sleazy used car dealership. When trying to take it for a test drive the car kept stalling. The salesman trying to sell us the car asked his boss what's up. He said it was a dual barrel carburetor and it needs plenty of time to warm up before trying to drive it. Next the dealer realized it needed gas so he said he would take it across the street to the local gas station. I got out of the driver seat, but my brother stayed in the passenger seat, figuring he'd go along for the ride. So just as the salesman pulled out onto the busy street the car stalled and the passenger door swung open. Luckily my brother was wearing his seat belt. After these chain of events the salesman must have thought he was the
greatest salesman ever, but really, the door was an easy fix and the warming up is no problem. So after checking out the body, checking under the hood and driving it, we realized it was too good a deal to give up and we bought the car.
The End ...
The future
The future of this car cannot be foretold, but what I would like to do with it I can state. First I will be adding equipment to the engine. Then I plan to install the suspension (air ride). Then I'd like to add a nice velvet interior possibly with bucket seats in the front and a custom back seat. Also, I plan to add a stereo and possibly other electronic equipment.
The final step will be the external work. I'll probably put a nice metal flake paint job on the car plus a good set of rims. I also hope to paint a few murals on the car. In the mean time the journal should satisfy you're curiosity for what all has been done.
