The most resent official complete list of the birds of Mongolia was published in 1991 on the book "Catalogue of the birds of the Mongolian People's Republic" by Dr. V.E.Fomin and Dr. A.Bold, Nauka Press, Moscow. This book included all bird species that had been found chiefly between the years of 1975-1991 during the Soviet Union and Mongolian Joint Biological Expeditions to Mongolia.

Since 1991 over 20 species have been newly recorded in Mongolia, and there still needs to compile the recordings and to confirm their status of those species.

The following is a list of 415 bird species of 17 classes, 56 family, 191 genus that had been recorded by 1991, and is taken from the above mentioned book. A total of 322 species breed in this country, and of them 93 were resident species, and 229 were migratory species. And also about 72 vagrant and accidental visitor, and 6 winter visitor species from Arctic and Siberia were recorded in Mongolia.
