Star Trek: Earth Strike Episode 14: Leviathan
Sir, something is happening... reading elevated neutrino levels... its the Borg, Captain: they are back. As Data spoke a circle of energy irised open in mid space. Within and beyond it all that the crew could see was a boiling cloud of non-mass. Abruptly the shape of a Borg cube appeared in the centre, seeming to grow from a tiny dice to a huge monolith in the blink of an eye. As it emerged into normal space the |

watchers on the bridge of the Enterprise could see by the damaged corner, now half regenerated, that it was the same supercube that had fled the scene of the battle earlier. So! Their courage has returned! Worf exclaimed approvingly. The aliens dampening field appeared to have no effect on the Borg as the cube bore down on the enemy fleet. Fighter squadrons peeled off one after another, attacking the cube in wave upon wave, with energy weapons, missiles and even by ramming. The cube took horrendous damage, though it struck back, unleashing a continuous torrent of its own deadly fire from its many weapons systems, blasting bioships to pieces left and right. Great gouges and chunks were torn from the body of the cube as more and more of the small ships joined the fray, until the cube seemed to be surrounded by a swarm of angy hornets. Can we help them, mr Worf? Picard asked through gritted teeth. We are too far away to get a positive lock on the enemy, Worf answered with regret, and if we fire blind we are more likely to hit the cube than the enemy. Not good enough, damn it, not good enough! Picard thumped the arm of his command chair as he watched his enemy defend his home planet. Despite the maelstrom that engulfed the cube, however, it did not seem to require the Enterprises assistance. Its sheer size and power enabled the cube to crash through the biofleet, like a shark through a school of piranna. The Borg have breached the Species 8472s defensive perimeter. Data observed coolly. Suddenly the destructive energy beam linking the rosette formation of the biofleets capital ships and the Earth winked off as the large vessels reorinted in a smooth manaeuveur, keeping the same formation but swivelling to face the huge Borg cube approaching them. Once again the deadly fire erupted from the prows of the bioships to link at a central node from which the planet destroying beam scorched space as it drilled into the largest Borg vessel ever seen. Within seconds the whole of the supercube lit up from within as the immense craft attempted to absorb enough energy to destroy a planet. The glow intensified, then, inevitably, the entire supercube blew apart in a cataclysmic explosion! Sometimes it takes a large weapon to kill a monster. Worf said gravely. Picard sighed and closed his eyes for a moment. Only this morning he would never have believed that he would mourn the destruction of a Borg vessel, but the fate of the supercube would presage that of the Earth. He was jolted from his momentary reverie by Frosty as the young Breen said in a wondering voice: Surely... it cant be... |
