facts about the museum

Some day before too long, this will be a museum with its own building that you can visit, in Toronto, Canada.

But for now you can have a tour on the Web.

The Museum of Childhood isn’t just for children.

It is about being a child. If you are a child now, or if you were a child ten or twenty (or seventy) years ago, you will enjoy it. Its programs will be directed to all age groups.
Our collection of over 6,000 items — babies’ and children’s clothing and furniture, toys, dolls, dishes, games, construction sets, model trains and cars, musical instruments, and more — lets us explore many ideas about childhood, across time and across cultures.

Some questions for exploration by means of our displays might include these:

  • How do Canadians today view children and childhood? Among the multitude of cultures that make up Toronto, how do views of childhood differ? How do views today compare with views in the past?

  • What is the role of play in children’s development? How do fantasy and make-believe contribute? What kinds of playthings are found around the world? Who makes the playthings — the children or the adults?

  • Do children have basic rights? How have ideas about children’s rights and responsibilities developed over the course of history? Where is the line between children having responsibilities and children being exploited for their labour?
So, feel free to have a look around. If you have any questions, we would be delighted to hear from you.
