Make boats out of an orange peel
When Luise was a little girl
in the Netherlands around 1940, her father showed her how to do this.
You may want an adult with you to do the actual cutting.
The bigger your orange is, the easier it is to work with!
First, roll the orange on the table top, pressing down a bit, so as
to loosen the peel. Then cut through the peel from the top of the orange
to the bottom with a sharp knife. Make four cuts in all, each one a
quarter of the way around the orange so that when you carefully peel
the skin away, you have four pieces, like this:
CAN YOU DRAW THESE THINGS AS DESCRIBED? IF NOT CLEAR, CALL LOET OR ME.You
will need four toothpicks to make the mast, and some paper to make the
sails. The sails can be either a triangle or a square. You can decorate
them with crayons. To fix each sail on its mast, push the toothpick
through the paper like this:
Then press each mast gently into the soft peel. Now each boat is ready
to sail! If you put the boats into a shallow pan of water on the top
of the table, you can move them by gently blowing on the sails. Or you
can take them with you into the bathtub!
