Elizabeth Moby and Smith Hineman

 

Elizabeth Moby, the daughter of Joe and Susan Mawby, was born April 1865 in Michigan.  Elizabeth married Smith Hineman, about 1882.  Smith, the son of Tush-quay-aw-baw-no, was born in March 1855 in Michigan.  Elizabeth and Smith had six children, Gus, born February 1884, Lucy, born January 1888, Martha, born March 1890, and Alice (Elizabeth), born August 1893, and Thomas and Lizzie, both born May 14, 1898.

 

Elizabeth is listed with her parents on 1870 and 1880 United States Census.  In 1870 she is listed as Shibaznaw.  In 1880 she is listed as 14 years old and attending school. 

 

Smith and Elizabeth are listed together on the 1900 United States Census for Eden Township, Mason County, Michigan.  The census lists Smith’s Indian name as Wisteaw Smith.  He was an Ottawa Indian.  The census lists Smith’s birth date as March 1855, and Elizabeth’s as April 1865, making him 45 years old and her 35.  Smith and Elizabeth had been married for 18 years.  Smith was employed as a laborer during the census year.  It states that Elizabeth has had 8 children, 4 of which were still living.  They have 4 children listed with them: Gust, age 16, born February 1884, Lucia, age 12, born January 1888, Maud, age 10, born March 1890, and Alice, age 6, born August 1893.  All members of the family have Michigan listed as their place of birth.  The special schedule relating to Indians shows that they were taxed Indians, living in a fixed dwelling, having acquired citizenship in 1855. 

 

In the 1920 United States Census, Smith, age 80, and Lizzie, age 60, are renting in Elicisor Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan.  Their daughter, Alice James, 25, and grandsons, Jessie,7, and Frank, 2-5/12's, James are living with them.  They also have their son Gus, 35, his wife, Mary, 31, and their children, David, 10, and Christinia, 8, living with them.  Smith and Gus are cutting wood and logs in the lumber camp. Gus, Alice, and David can read and write.

 

In the 1930 Census, Lizzie, 63, and Smith, 73, are renting in Oliver Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan with their 2 grandsons, Frank, 12, and Jessie, 17, James.  Smith is a laborer in the lumber camp.  Smith was married at the age of 19 and Lizzie was 17.  They can not read or write but there grandsons can.  Frank is attending school.  They are paying $1.00 per month rent.
