Joseph and Susan Mawby

 

 

Kush-ke-maw-ne-say (a.k.a. Joe Mawby) was born between 1829 and 1839.  This estimate on birth year is based on the age reported on different censuses and the Durant Rolls.  He married Susan around 1860.  The estimate on marriage year is based on the 1910 Census.

 

Kush-ke-maw-ne-say is listed on the annuity rolls of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.  In the years 1858 and 1861 he is listed in the band of Chief Pay-shaw-se-gay.  In the years 1865 and 1868 he was listed in the band of Chief Pe-nay-se.

 

There is a birth record for a Jane Mobby (Indian), born on January 5, 1868, in Sheridan, Newaygo County, Michigan to parents Joseph Mobby and Selebigah Mobby.  Joseph is a farmer and was born in Newaygo County, Michigan, and Selebigah was born in Ionia, Michigan.

 

Joseph Mabe is listed on the 1870 United States Census in the town of Brooks, Newaygo county, Michigan, page 3.  He is 32 and a raftsman. He is married to Schiliga, her age looks like 30.  Children are listed as: son, Nawdazine age 9, daughter, Shibaznaw, age 6, daughter, Mortinaw, age 4, and son, Joseph, age 1/12, born in May.  Joseph's family is living next door to Augustus Mabe, age 30, a raftsman,  Anzelick, age 23, a housekeeper, sons, Apabu??, age 7, and Leouis, age 4. Spelling on some names are difficult to read.

 

Joe Mawby is listed on the 1880 United States Census in Eden Township, Mason county, Michigan.  Joe Mawby – Married Male Indian, Age 42, Occupation - Farmer, Cannot Read or Write, Born in Michigan, Both Parents Born in Michigan......Keeyan Mawby - Wife, Married Female Indian, Age 46, Occupation - Keeping House, Cannot Read or Write, Borrn in Michigan, Both Parents Born in Michigan.....Jim Mawby - Son, Single Male Indian, Age 19, Occupation - Works on Farm, Cannot Write, Born in Michigan.....Elizabeth Mawby - Daughter, Single Female Indian, Age 14, Attended School, Born in Michigan.....Angelic Mawby - Daughter, Single Female Indian, Age 12, Cannot Read or Write, Born in Michigan.....Joseph Mawby - Son, Single Male Indian, Age 10, Attended School, Born in Michigan.....Mary Mawby - Daughter, Single Female Indian, Age Unknown, Attended School, Born in Michigan.....Waub na be qua - Boarder, Widowed Indian Female, Age 66, Born in Michigan, Both Parents Born in Michigan.....Waub Nagrett (Unsure on spelling) - Boarder, Widowed Indian Female, Age 100, Blind, Cannot Read or Write, Born in Michigan, Both Parents Born in Michigan. 

 

Joseph Moby is listed on the 1900 United States Census in Branch Township, Mason County, Michigan.  He and Susan (listed as Shif-ag-aw) are living with their son Joseph and his family.  They are living next door to their son James and his family.  Joseph’s birth date is listed as May 1829.  He is working as a day laborer.  It states that he was married 41 years.  Susan’s birth date is listed as March 1829.  It states that she had 11 children, 5 of which were still living in 1910.

 

Joseph and Susan are listed on the 1908 Durant Roll.  Their family is listed on the field notes written by Durant.  The field notes indicate that Susan was married prior to Joe.  Her first husband had died.  Susan and her first husband had a daughter Polly Sands.  Polly is 58 and living in Canada. Her children are:  Lydia Riley, 32, married to a Canadian Indian, with a daughter, Lila, age 5; Silas Sands, age 27, father of 3 children; Lizzie Sands, 25 and single, and Walter Sands, age 21 and single. 

 

Joseph Moby is listed on the 1910 United States Census in Logan Township, Mason County, Michigan.  He is 71 years of age and living with his wife Lizzie.  This is his first and only marriage. He is farming his own land, which is held free and clear, and he pays taxes.  He is a full blooded Ottawa Indian.  He is able to speak English.  Susan is listed as Lizzie.  She is 77 years of age.  It shows she has had 7 children, 4 of which are still living. She is blind.  Susan is a full blooded Ottawa Indian.  It also shows that her marriage to Joe is her first marriage.  She speaks her native tongue.  Their granddaughter, Lucy Hinneman, is living with them.

 

Susan Moby died on September 19, 1919 in Logan Township, Mason County, Michigan.  Her death is recorded on page 1 of Liber 3 for Logan Township in the Mason County Clerk’s Office.  She is listed as Lizzie Mauby on the record.  It states that she was white, married, and 93 years old.  The cause of her death was stated as old age.  It states that she was born in Michigan. 

 

In the 1920 Census Joe is living by himself in Washington, Vilas County, Wisconsin, but next door to his son Joe, daughter-in-law, Mary, and granddaughter, Rosie. Joe is 89 years old.  He owns his home which is mortgaged. Joe and both of his parents were born in Michigan.  He can read and write and he speaks English.  The census shows that Joe does not work any longer.

 

Joe Moby died January 31, 1929.  His death is recorded in Volume 3, Page 1110 of the Vilas County, WI death records. The records show Joe as: 

Male, Red, Married, Age 117, Guide & Trapper, Birthplace Michigan, father & mother both Unknown and their place of birth is unknown, Informant Joe Moby, Phelps, Wisconsin.  Date of Death 31 Jan 1929, cause "Old Age", Burial Phelps, Wis.
