Most Russians live in big enormous apartments which were built in blocks during Soviet times. Almost all floor plans are identical, regardless of location. Since each apartment is private property, variety exists in the decor. Click on a photo for a larger version. |

Our building, which looks like every other in Kupchino. This is the apartment where Yulia grew up. Here parents have moved to a newer building not far away.

This is the entrance room to the apartment. Two walls are covered in mirrors, so you are seeing my reflection as I lean against the door.

This is our living room. It's not much smaller than the living room in my parents' house. Yulia's father is a furniture designer, and it shows in the cabinetry.

This is my room. Vanya is sitting on the bed, posing nicely for my picture. (I apologize for the quality; the photo was quite dark and needed to be lightened.)

And of course, Yulia, in the kitchen. She had just returned from the hairdresser. It was 150 rubles ($5) to have her hair cut and highlighted.

This is Smolny Cathedral, near the center of St. Petersburg. My classes are held directly behind the cathedral. As you can see, it was rainy the day I took this picture. (Something not unusual for St. Petersburg.)

A detail from the side of Smolny Cathedral.

The Center of Russian Language and Culture, where my classes are held.

Interior of the Center of Russian Language and Culture. I like the pink walls. |
