Tuam The City of Tuam was both an ecclesiastical and political capital of Connacht and at one time the capital of Ireland. During the 12th century reign of Turlough O'Connor, High King of Ireland, many splendid monuments were constructed. For those with the Irish surname of Hession, one of these monuments is of special interest; The Market Cross or High Cross of Tuam. Cathedral of Saint Mary's Built in the 12th century, all that remains of the ancient Cathedral is the Chancel Arch which is part of the present day Cathedral, as is, other relics of the 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 19th centuries.
