Mobile technologies have advanced a lot in the last few years. The cellular phone (or cellphone for short) has transformed from being an instrument of basic communications to being an instrument of entertainment. This presentation aims to explain some of the technologies found on cellphones on the market today. Some of the technologies I will explain are WAP, GPRS, J2ME, MMS, EMS, 3G...
SOFTWARE
WAP or Wireless Application Protocol is a protocol used to access the 'internet' on mobile phones.
Is the latest (sept 2004) java technology used for mobile phones applications. It is platform independent, which means applications designed for it can run on most phones on the market which support J2ME independent of the make.
Extended Messaging Services (EMS) are the next step from SMS. They allow cellphone users to send semi-multimedia messages with sounds, simple graphics and longer messages. Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) are an extention of EMS. They allow longer messages, colour graphics, sounds and video.
HARDWARE
General Packet Radio Service is the method used to transmit data to mobile phones in packets (similar to TCP/IP) such that the data throughput is faster and the user pays for the data transferred and not for time connected.
