The History Of Canasta
The game of Canasta has an interesting history that I encourage you to read up on. Back in 1939, during the second world war, at a jockey club in Uruguay, attorney Segundo Santos and architect Alberto Serrato came up with what they called "The Game".  These two (who were Bridge partners at the club) decided to introduce a game of skill and chance that broke up the monotony of Bridge, or Rummy.  They eventually named the game 'Canastillo', the Spanish word for 'little basket', probably after the little basket the cards were carried in. The name was shortened to Canasta, because it sounded nicer. I agree.
