| Chopper Bike: Looking Like a Bike | |||||||||||||||||||||
| More encouraging progress on the chopper bike project today. I cut the handlebars down and welded in sections of standard handlebar tubing off the old mountain bike. This was done to each end of the bars to allow standard grips, brake levers, and grip shifters to be mounted to the bars. Once that was done, I just had to see if this thing can actually be ridden. So, I threw on the rear derailer and chain, drilled a cross-hole in the frame to lock in the seat at level (Otherwise the seat liked to lean with the rider). I rolled it out onto the driveway and... Successs!!!!!! I rode about 2 laps around the driveway, which included short jaunts on the highway. The nice thing about a low bike like this is you can get away without brakes a lot easier than with a big 26" mountain bike. This thing rides really nice. The softtail suspension and the long wheelbase makes it very smooth and the wide seat and seated position is a lot easier on one's posterior! Now to add the shift/brake cables, kickstand, and head/tail lights! |
