Examples
of common contaminants include but not limited to: Arsenic, Lead,
Copper and Nitrate.
Arsenic: Higher levels of arsenic tend to be found more in groundwater
than in surface water. Long-term exposure to high concentrations
of arsenic in drinking water may cause different types of cancers;
lung, skin, liver, bladder, kidney.
Lead and Copper: It is believed that plumbing installed prior
to the 1930’s contains Lead and Copper and prolonged exposure
to these contaminants through drinking water may cause kidney
and liver problems.
Nitrate: Nitrate enters groundwater through runoff from fertilizer
application, leaching from septic systems and sewage. Health effects
of high nitrate levels include reproductive problems, methemoglobinemia
(blue-baby syndrome) and cancers.
Risk of exposure to these contaminants is highest in most sensitive
individuals such as, pregnant women, infants, children, and the
elderly.
The problem is that one cannot see, taste or smell these contaminants.
You might be connected to a public drinking water system which
is considered safe to drink but you could be getting contaminants
from your plumbing. It is therefore important that you regularly
monitor the quality of the water that comes out of your faucets.
