1976...my brother David and I (still having similar tastes, and speaking) have first band...doing covers of Yes, Genesis, Utopia (he is big Todd and Gabriel fan) that never leaves the basement...was pretty good though... // 1978 I meet Mel Someroski (Fiber artist/Perfomance Art legend) and his partner Connie May (Dance Prof)while at Kent St., I learn the possible depths of conceptual and Performance Art and am Changed.... // 1981 back in Cleveland, join 'Flying Colors' a cover band doing 70s fusion (Brand x, Dixie Dregs etc), this never gets out (a good thing), good players chewing bones too big for our little jaws.... // 1982 join r&b/reggae/rock band the 'Fauves'(Foves: french for 'wild beasts' used for early french Impressionist painters i.e. Monet etc), this band tours some is good at what it does, I play bass for a while .... // 1983 go to a warehouse party of local artists, meet many visual artists, open a creative door....// 1983 meet dancers from CSU's dance dept. at a party "jamming" with musicians, I discover the beauty of free Improvisation, movement and music combined, leads to wonderful new relationships, later perform with these dancers at PAND concert.....
"From left to right: Cortez Acoustic gtr., Liberian Djembe, 6 ft. mexican rainstick, bamboo Didjeridu (made by Carl), bamboo Didj (made by Mk2), Yucca Didj (made by Mk2), Senegalese Djembe (Skin by Earth Rhythm/Alex Wedmedyk), 1972 Gibson Les Paul custom with gk2 pickup installed; center: Mbira, Nigerian talking drum, conch shell. 2 euchylyptus didj's from Aust., and other assorted perc not shown." 1984 Start to go to summerdance classes and sit in with accompanists (Keith Fleming/Billy Larkin) learn how to watch the dancers/instructors // first performance of soundscapes/loops for Cleveland Art Fest fall 84 // fall 84 form Ataje, Improvisational ensmble with Marimba/percussionist Greg Selker (klezmer/jazz musician) great relationship, begin as trios grows to 6 members in 86 (2 gtrs, 2 basses, 2 percusionists- beat ya to it Crim hehe) and perform live on wcpn, an NPR affiliate, 4 months later I Interview and Perform solo on the same show (*see table of contents) // Fall 86 am working as accompanist for CSU's modern classes // Ataje falls apart from the strain of egos, GReg and I remain friends // summer 89 first serious commision for Modern Dance piece by Mark Taylor "Font" performed both in Cleve. & NYC (see table/contents) gets good review in the Times, even comments on the music! I feel more confident // 89-94 perform with African Dance Co.s, Iroko and Dance Africa Dance with some touring... // to 94 I am forming a band, meet Performance Poet Ray McNeice at one of his gigs, we talk, connect, he joins "Behavior" ...I wish it to be 90% improv...it is only for a while we perform at Starwood Fest in 95 for 500 people they love it...and again in 97 opening for Baba Olatunji...He Loves us! we record a tape for Ray and I leave when the music takes a back seat. // winter 98 I get the nerve to record my first CD (first recording as Product) it sells out.... and now you are here....Stay tuned :)
