I'm collecting a list of Eddings' Inconsistencies. I have a few right here, but if have have some more, please do mail me. I NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS PAGE USEFUL! EMail Me!

Oh, and if there are any mistakes, tell me about them, too. I am also posting reasons, if there are any, for the inconsistencies.

NOTE! I know I have received many inconsistencies from readers of this page. Unfortunately, not too long ago, my email inbox went corrupt, and I lost all my mail. If you have submitted some inconsistencies, please submit them again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Destroying things with the Will and the Word

People who use the Will and the Word are undoubtedly forbidden to annihilate something (see the death of Ctuchik), but why cannot they instead change the target into air or void, which would surely destroy it, with no inconvenience for the sorcerer?

This was submitted by Emeric Maury. Please direct all correspondance regarding this inconsistency to him.

Why not use the Will and the Word?

In Belgarath the Sorcerer, one of the Bel* (probably Belgarath) are traveling through the mountains returning to the Vale, and he encounter's a talking, ogre-like monster. He doubts he will survive the encounter and uses a dagger to stab the ogre-like monster. Why didn't he just use the Will and the Word?

Reason: ?

Sephrenia's Reaction to Mirtai's Slavery

In The Sapphire Rose, Sephrenia is shocked when she hears about Mirtai's slavery and Atan slavery in general. However, Sephrenia SHOULD have known about Atan culture, ESPECIALLY since Styricum is right next to Atan!

Reason: Just a continuity error made by the authors.

Horizontal Rule

Mirtai and Wearing Gold

Mirtai says that she cannot wear gold until she has passed through the the rite to become an adult in Atan culture. However, she wears gold at Ehlana's and Sparhawk's wedding -- BEFORE she became an adult.

Reason: The Eddings probably were not thinking about Mirtai's culture when they wrote about the wedding.

Polgara and little boys

In Pawn of Prophecy, at the end of Chapter 3, Polgara exclaims to Belgarath, "What do I know about the raising of little boys?" Obviously, she would be the authority on the subject considering the numerous generations of little boys she rose in Belgarath the Sorcerer.

Reason: A continuity flaw between Pawn of Prophecy and Belgarath the Sorcerer.

Horizontal Rule

Dolmant's Rank

In The Sapphire Rose, in Chapter 8, Dolmant is incorrectly referred to as a Primate instead of a Patriarch by Patriarch Makova in the Basilica.

Reason: Bone-headed error and perhaps an editing error.

Horizontal Rule

Patriarch Emban of where?

In The Sapphire Rose, in Chapter 7, at one point, he is referred to as the Patriarch of Usara. However, the correct spelling is Ucera.

Reason: Probably an editing error.

Horizontal Rule

Gared and Geran

Garion's father, Geran, was named after the small prince who survived after Nyissans killed the royal family of Riva. However, at one point in the books, the small Prince is named GARED. Then, later on, the name is GERAN. This one slips by easily.

Reason: Just a bone-headed error. (Sorry Mr. Eddings :)

Horizontal Rule

Ce'Nedra the Dryad

Some has been said that Ce'Nedra, the Rivan Queen, would not have been able to give birth to any boys, since she is a Dryad, and Dryads "only have girls."

Reason: None of Eddings books ever said that Dryads couldn't have boys. A general belief is that they might have killed the child if it was a boy. They then would capture the male travelers, and so on.

Asharak and Chamdar

From reading Belgarath the Sorcerer, we know that Belgarath (and Silk) knows that Asharak the Murgo is really Chamdar the Grolim. However, in the Belgariad, when the group finds out that Asharak is Chamdar, everyone (including Belgarath and Silk) acts shocked. Those two shouldn't have been so surprised when they found out. That brings up another inconsistency. Why didn't Belgarath tell Polgara and the rest of their traveling group?

Reason: Perhaps it would have been somehow dangerous for others to know the truth about Chamdar. Other than that, it's just a bone-headed error. (Sorry Mr. Eddings :)

Belgarath's So Poor

I've seen a few discussions where people are asking, "Why is Belgarath always so poor? He mined all that gold once..." It's true, while Belgarath has plenty of gold and can make some, he is always very ratty and seedy.

Reason: Belgarath once mentioned that people accept him much more and think less of him if he dresses poorly. It let him "get around" without being easily detected.
