Belgarath the Sorcerer

In this prequel to the Belgariad, we learn about the life of Belgarath, the sorcerer who lived for over 7000 years! He was born in the small village of Gara in the ancient world--before Torak split it. He was orphaned and led a very mischevious young life. Finally, after being "caught in the barn" with a villager's daughter, he runs away from the village. A mysterious old man in a cart lets him take a ride with him and drops him about in Tolnedra. He finds a village of old people, who welcome him to stay. They seem to be dying at a rapid pace. He tires of them, and runs away again. Winter comes, and he nearly dies, but he happens upon a large tower who belongs to the God Aldur. He is invited and stays with the God. Years after his arrival, he discovers "The Will and the Word." Others begin to filter into the Vale of Aldur, and Belgarath trains each of Aldur's disciples.

Then the world is torn asunder. Aldur's brother, Torak, comes and steals the Orb of Aldur, a mystical stone with many powers. Torak uses the orb to split the earth in two. He is severely burned during the process.

Then Belgarath must recover the Orb. He takes a King's sons on the journey. They successfully recover the Orb. Riva, the new keeper of the Orb, takes it to the isolated Isle of the Winds, where it is deemed safe. That's not the end, however. One generation of descendents of Riva are killed, except for one young Prince. The Orb again is in unsafe hands. Belgarath and his daughter, Polgara, take care of the generations of boys, waiting for the day to reclaim the throne of Riva. A Rivan Warder is the official leader, but they all wait for the day the Rivan King will return.
