| William HURST, son of Ambrose Valentine HURST and Elizabeth GOODMAN, was born on the 8th June, 1794, at Wootton, Bedfordshire, England. He married Mary KEEP, daughter of Richard KEEP and Elizabeth HULL, also of Bedfordshire. William and Mary were living at Wootton with their 4 children Rhoda, Sarah, Leah and Ambrose when William was arrested on the 17th December, 1822, for horse stealing from Owen CAMBRIDGE of Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire. He was tried at Cambridge, Isle of Ely, Assizes on the 13th March 1823 and sentenced to death by hanging, but after a plea for leniency by Owen CAMBRIDGE, this was changed to transportation for life. William HURST alias GOODMAN, was described as age c.29 years, 5'51/4" tall with light grey eyes and brown hair. His trade was listed as groom or ploughman. William was transported on the 9th August, 1823 sailing from Downs aboard "Asia", with 150 male convicts on board, bound for Van Dieman's Land. The ship sailed via the Cape of Good Hope and arrived in Hobart 163 days later, on the 19th January, 1824. On arrival William was assigned to Thomas ABRAHAMS, Chief District Constable of Stranford, in the Brighton District. On the 8th February, 1827, William petitioned to have his wife and children sent out to him from Bedfordshire England. ABRAHAMS certified that he had served him faithfully and well and that he was perfectly able to support his family, should they be sent to him. On the 8th March 1827, Lieutenant Governor ARTHUR approved that the family be sent from England. Mary HURST and her 4 children arrived at Botany Bay on the "Lucy Davidson", and they then sailed to Tasmania on the "Guildford" on the 1st January, 1830. William and Mary had 4 more children in Tasmania, Elizabeth Maria, Emma, Rebecca and William Keep, 8 children in all. On the 26th February, 1859 William HURST died at Wellington Street, Hobart, cause of death was listed as old age and debility. Mary HURST nee KEEP died on the 6th January, 1866 at Argyle Street, Hobart. Both are buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Tasmania A Narrative by Mr. Owen Cambridge about the search for two horses stolen from his stables. Most of Willliam and Mary's children married and had families of their own: RHODA, born 18th December 1815, Wootton, Bedfordshire England married William GLADMAN, on the 29th April, 1834 at Brighton, Tasmania. Photo LEAH, born 24th December, 1819, Wootton, Bedfordshire, England, married John ALSOP on the 8th July, 1836 at Pontville in the Brighton District, Tasmania. They had 11 children. Photo AMBROSE, born 5th October, 1821, at Wootton, Bedfordshire, England married twice, his 1st wife was Sophia GRAHAM they married on the 25th January 1847, they had 3 children. His 2nd wife was Bridget O'LOUGHLIN, who he married on 3rd February, 1857 at Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia.They had 6 children. Photo EMMA, born 2nd April, 1832, Tasmania, married Charles DAVIS on the 11th September, 1848, Hobart, Tasmania. They had 8 children. Photo REBECCA, born 11th September, 1833, Tasmania, married Jeremiah HOWELL, on the 29th March 1852 at the Holy Trinity Church, Tasmania. They had 12 children. Photo WILLIAM KEEP, born 21st April, 1837 Austin's Ferry, Tasmania, married twice, his 1st marriage was to Mary Ann CHALLENDER, they married on the 15th February, 1858, Tasmania, they had 1 child.His 2nd wife was Elizabeth Mary TURNOR, they married on the 22nd October, 1863, Tasmania.
