On to the methods!
Orris Root commonly known as a fixative in pot pourri, incenses and perfumery, but also considered to be good for skin moisturising and elasticity. The powder can be added to peeling creams and soap recipes.
INCI name: Iris florentina L.

Palm Kernel Oil - moisturising and protective, but a very fatty, heavy product. Often used in soap-making, as it saponifies easily.
INCI name: Elaeis Guineensis

Parabens When I was making skin creams commercially, it was necessary to use an effective preservative. As no entirely effective natural preservative was available and I couldnt have customers complaining about mouldy skin cream, I used this paraben formulation from Aromantic. Their literature claims that some forms of paraben are used in Sweden to preserve jam and various foodstuffs, but this still doesnt make me happy about using parabens. If you are making your own products and dont require an extended shelf life, you may not need to use parabens at all.
INCI name: Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben & Propylparaben

Pomegranate Extract - a strongly antioxidant extract, added in small quantities to recipes
INCI name: Punica granatum

Preservative 12 A fairly new, broad-spectrum preservative that tackles bacteria, yeasts and mould fungi in your products. Not pH-sensitive like Preservative K, but not suitable for anything containing detergent ingredients.
INCI name: Phenoxyethanol, Ethylexylglycerin

Preservative K an alternative to paraben-based preservatives in products with a pH value less than 5.5.
INCI name: Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate

Pseudo Collagen - derived from Brewers Yeast instead of animal origins, and used - just like the animal collagen beloved of the beauty industry - to improve skin elasticity, hydration and firmness for a more resiliant, youthful appearance.
INCI name: Yeast Extract
Pumice pumice powder is naturally derived and can be added to soap and scrub recipes. Particularly good for hard skin on feet.
INCI name: Pumice

Pumpkin Seed Oil Very high vitamin and mineral content, with lots of zinc and Omegas 3, 6 and 9. Used in recipes that provide a lifting, toning effect on the skin.
INCI name: Cucurbita maxima

Rosehip Extract / Oil the only vegetable oil that contains natural vitamin A, rosehip is great for oily or sensitive skin, enlarged pores and uneven skin tone. Also an excellent source of Omega 3.
INCI name: Rosa rubginosa

Sea Silk - an additive derived from a marine vegetable instead of silkworms, but used to impart a protein-rich, silky feeling to creams, shampoos and lotions. Absolutely brilliant for shaving lotions, or just a bit of extra luxury!
INCI name: Hydrolysed vegetable protein

Shea Butter /Oil - A very commonly used vegetable butter, derived from the fruit of the African shea tree. Some of the best shea I have used comes from fair trade programmes in Ghana. It is a very nourishing, moisturising product which helps heal damaged skin and contains phytosterols, which help aid cell repair. Makes a lovely body butter when whipped, while the oil is a great and really easy application for stretchmarks on mums-to-be.
INCI name: Butyrospermum parkii

Silica used in nail treatments and skin creams. Found naturally in herbs such as horsetail.
INCI name: Silica

Silk gel - another Aromantic product I sometimes use (although it does contain 0.3% parabens as a preservative), this natural, sugar-derived additive makes creams and lotions feel really incredibly smooth and soft. It's also moisturising and helps reduce the risk of allergic reactions when added to sensitive skin or baby recipes.
INCI name: Biosaccharide gum-1

Squalane - derived from Olive Oil, squalane is sometimes added in small quantities to creams to make them more spreadable.
INCI name: Squalane

Thistle Oil A dry oil rich in essential fatty acids including Vitamin F and Omegas 3 and 6, which constitute up to 80% of the oils content. Good for oily skin or enlarged pores.
INCI name: Carthamus tinctorius
