The Ulster Cancer Foundation
Cancer continues to be a major cause of illness and premature death in Northern Ireland. Considerable progress has been made over the past 30 years in the fight against cancer and the Ulster Cancer Foundation is well known locally for its contribution to that success.
The UCF combats cancer in Northern Ireland by:
- Helping patients and their families live with cancer
- Supporting local cancer research towards better treatment and cure
- Preventing cancer through public education and training
- Raising funds to combat cancer
THIS WORK SAVES LIVES - THIS WORK NEEDS MONEY
This year alone:
- UCF nurses will respond to around 3,000 calls from cancer patients and their familes
- Nurse counsellors in the Cancer Units will help patients come to terms with their cancer and cope better during treatment
- Around 2,000 cancer patients will attends meetings of the UCF's 25 support groups
- 25,000 children (P6-P7) will join the Smokebusters Club
- Public education programmes will reach many thousands of local people in schools, workplaces and communities
- Research carried out in the Foundation's own laboratories will advance and improve the treatment and rehabilitation of local cancer patients

Friends of Montgomery House
Friends of Montgomery House is a registered charity based at Belvoir Park Hospital. The support of "Friends" is viewed as essential in improving the care of patients who attend Belvoir Park Hospital from all over Northern Ireland. Friends is made up of a dedicated team of hospital staff and members of the general public who represent all areas of the province.
Friends have provided Belvoir Park Hospital with a number of major innovations and developments. Almost �3 million has been spent to improve patient care and treatment.
Projects include:
- Glenview, the patient hostel, has been extensively refurbished to include ensuite bedrooms and bathroom facilities. Total cost: �200,000.
- A state-of-the-art simulator - which plans treatment for patients - was purchased after an anonymous donation of �400,000 to the Friends. Total Cost: �450,000.
- The Gerald Lynch Centre, a drop-in support and advice centre that also provides emotional help for patients and their families. Total cost: �50,000.
- The Hospital Church Centre. Total cost: �110,000.
- Two colourful gardens with a safe playground for cildren. Total cost �50,000.
Other initiatives costing �2 million have included medical research, the latest equipment for the X-Ray, Laboratory and Pharmacy Departments, and patient comforts.
