Honors Study Topic: Pop Culture

Each month we will look at one of the  9 Issues that are presented on the ptk.org site so that we might get a better understanding for the program, an possibilities on how to implement them for our chapters. They will be taken directly from
http://www.ptk.org/honors/guide/04-06/1.htm

Issue One: Definition - What is the definition of popular culture?

Study Questions

1. What criteria do we use to define popular culture?
2. Are popular culture and mass culture the same thing?
3. How do different societies define popular culture?
4. How can we distinguish between high culture and low culture? Where does popular culture fit in?
5. How has the definition of popular culture changed over time?
6. To what extent is the definition of popular culture in the eye of the beholder?
7. How can one objectively analyze popular culture?
8. Is there a difference between popular culture and pop culture? If so, what is it?

Model for Implementation

Sponsor a showing of the film Amadeus (1984) on your campus and invite the college and local community to join you. Arrange to have a panel of qualified members of the college faculty lead a discussion of the film at the conclusion of the showing. After soliciting audience reaction to the dramatic account of Mozart's career, have the panel engage those present in a discussion of the questions concerning popular culture as it is depicted in the film's rendition of 18th century life. Address the questions presented in this issue, paying special attention to whether popular and mass culture are the same things, and how one distinguishes between high, low and popular culture. Create an audio or video record of the event for subsequent chapter consideration.
