Effects:
Just
like air pollution, water pollution is harmful to the natural environment and man.
§Aquatic organisms living in contaminated water
would take in the toxic pollutants. For example, around deep bay, have been
found containing high concentrations of heavy metals. If people eat a lot of
these shellfish,they will be ill.
§ Many
beaches are polluted with solid wastes. Some are so polluted with bacteria
that they have to be closed. This means a loss of recreational resource.
§When the coastal water is heavily loaded with organic
wastes, eutrophication occurs. This gives rise to red tides.
--Dissolved oxygen content in the water will be reduced and fish will be suffocated to death.
--Some red tides are toxic. The toxin may accumulates in the shellfish and threaten the health of people when being
eaten.
§Polluted water often gives out an unpleasant
odour.
Solutions:
Measures
by the government:
-- the Water Pollution Control Regulations set the standard of water
quality
-- the harbors of Hong Kong are divided into 10 Water Control Zones
-- sewage collection systems an sewage treatment have been built to treat
the sewage before
discharge into the sea
-- government also creates many leaflets to take
people draw the attention how to treat the sewage
e.g. factory owners,restaurant owners
-- monitoring stations are set up.the impact of large-scale projects on
water quality is under
close supervision and measures taken if pollution problems occur
Measures by people:
-- cut down the use of the water
-- farmers should not dump the animal wastes to the
rivers
directly.
-- factories owners should not dump the toxic
substances
and chemical substances into the
sea directly, it should be after discharged.
-- don’t waste the solid waste to the sea, rivers
How
do the government spread the idea of reducing pollution ?
Environmental campaigns:
* exhibitions
*festivals
Pollution Prevention
Seminars
Promotion on environmental awareness of young people
:
* talks and exhibitions at schools
*visits to environmental facilities
