Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana was the 17th mission, founded September 8, 1797, by Father Lasuen. Named for King of Spain, St Ferdinand.

This is the fourth mission within a four-month period that Father Lasuen founded. It was designed to close the long gap between mission San Gabriel and San Buenaventura.
