Governor Alvarado. The sale was eventually nullified and the property was returned to the Church by the United States government. The original adobe church was destroyed in the 1868 earthquake. Then in 1869, a wooden gothic-style church named St. Joseph was erected on the original site and stood there until 1982, when it was relocated to Burlingame. From 1982 to 1985, a replica of the original adobe church was built, through the efforts of the Committee for the Restoration of the Mission San Jose and the Diocese of Oakland.
