Some Major Egyptian Gods and Goddesses

Amun-His name means the "Hidden One". He was the god of the atmosphere, and the main god of the empire.

Ammut-

The devourer of sinner's hearts, represented as part crocodile, part hippopotamus.

Anubis- The jackal headed god of mummification. The black colour of Anubis is not natural to the jackals of Egypt, but may refer to the discoloration of a body after death.For more information on mummification, Click Here.


Apis- A god of fertility, represented as a bull.

Aten- God of the sun disk.

Atum- Self-created creator of the universe. His name means "The Complete One".

Bastet- The cat goddess, protector of pregnant females.

Bes-
A household god, very much like a gnome, that kept away evil spirits.

Duamutef- The jackal-headed protecter of the stomach of the dead. His head is often carved into canopic jars.

Geb- The god of the earth, grandson of Atum and husband of Nut.

Hapi- Baboon headed protector of the lungs of the deceased.

Hathor- The mother goddess, daughter of Re, she nourishes the living and the dead and is often pictured in the form of a cow.

Horus- The sky god, often in the form of a falcon. He is the divine symbol of the king.

Imseti- The protector of the liver of the dead, portrayed as a mummified man.

Isis- A goddess of creation and the restorer of the deceased, mother of Horus and wife of Osiris.

Khepri- The scarab god, believed to be the one to roll the sun in and out of the sky each day. He is a symbol of rebirth.

Khnum- A god who creates life from a potter's wheel, (don't ask me how, I don't know) often pictured with a ram's head.

Khonsu- The god of the moon and of healing, he is the son of Amun and Mut.

Maat- Goddess of truth and justice. She is the daughter of Re and she wears a feather on her head.

Min- A god of fertility of plants and animals.

Mut- Wife of Amun and mother of Khonsu. Her name means "mother".

Neith- Goddess of war and creation.

Nekhbet- Protector and symbol of upper Egypt, portrayed as a vulture.

Nephthys- Sister of Isis, mother of Anubis. Protector of the dead.

Nut- The goddess of the sky, she is often shown covered in stars and lying over her husband, Geb.

Osiris- The god of the afterworld, husband and brother of Osiris.

Ptah- The god of crafts and art, a creator god.

Qebesenuef- Protector of the intestines of the dead. He has the head of a falcon.

Re- Creator of all life on earth, father of all gods, god of the sun.

Sekhmet- Wife of Ptah, the lion-headed goddess of battle.

Selket- The scorpion goddess. She was also the protector of women in childbirth.

Seth- The god of chaos, storms, thunder. He is the rival of Horus, and he killed Osiris.

Shu-
The god of the air, often seen holding up the sky.

Sobek- The crocodile god.

Tefnut- Goddess of the dew, the wife of Shu. She has the head of a lion.

Thoth- The ibis-headed god of writing and knowledge.

Wadjet- Cobra goddess, symbol of lower Egypt.
