Ancient Egyptian Medicine

The Egyptians believed that disease and death were caused by a god, spirit, or some other supernatural force. Some shaman-physicians (doctor-priests) would use magic to try and drive the force and cause of disease away from the patient. But they also used natural substances as medicines.


Honey and milk were used for the respiratory system and throat irritations. Honey was also used to dress wounds.

Aloe vera was used to treat worms, relieve headaches, soothe chest pains, burns, ulcers, and skin irritations.

Frankincense was used to treat throat infections, stop bleeding, and to treat asthma.

Dill was used to get rid of flatulence.

Caraway was used to treat flatulence and as a breath freshener.

Balsam Apple was used as a laxative.

Garlic had many uses. It was used to provide vitality, soothe flatulence, aid digestion, shrink hemorrhoids, rid the body of spirits, and as well to treat sore throats and toothaches. It also relieved pain, promote healing, stimulate sexual libido, and treated insomnia.

Camphor tree was used to soothe gums, treat fevers, and treat epilipsy.

Juniper was used to treat digestive ailments, and to soothe chest pains and stomach cramps.

Mustard seeds were used to induce vomiting and relieve chest pains.

Onions could be used to induce perspiration, prevent colds, as well as used as a diuretic.

Parsley was used as a diuretic.

Mint was used to get rid of flatulence, to aid in digestion, to stop vomiting, and as a breath freshener.

Sandalwood aided digestion, stopped diarrhea, and treated gout.

Poppy seeds were used to relieve insomnia, headaches, and as an anesthetic.
