Church regrets seeing Mira Pines in the news
At the request of the Sydney Presbytery of The United
Church of Canada, the Maritime Conference was asked to act on its behalf in the
request of the Knox United Church board of trustees and the possible sale of
property held in trust by the trustees. The Maritime Conference agreed to this
request, and at that time requested that all communication regarding the issue
be directed through the Maritime Conference office in Sackville, N.B.
It was with regret that the Maritime Conference office
received notice that an article relating to the lease between the Sydney
Presbytery and the Knox United Church appeared in the Cape Breton Post on May 21
(Breaking Camp).
Several issues were raised regarding the lease by the
pastoral charge. The presbytery is considering its next steps with respect to
the lease. The 2007 camping season at the Mira Pines site has been cancelled.
The Maritime Conference continues to work with the
congregation and the presbytery to resolve the concern within the polity of The
United Church of Canada.
