The Weather forecast on our route

A day from Mira’s diary

Friday 7th of September 2001
Figuera de Foz – Peniche

This morning there was a very nice breeze and we left instantly. After putting up the spinnaker, we made 6 to 7 knots an hour. Even when we had to put it down because of increasing wind we went very fast with the jib and the main sail. We ate a very nice salad and rounded Cabo Carvoeiro, which leads to the harbour on the Peninsula Peniche, just before nightfall. Near the Cape, there were very high waves coming after us, which made it very exiting and very fast!
Anyway we entered the harbour in the dark planning to throw out our anchor somewhere. We saw lots of very big, but free, moorings, and therefor no empty spot where to lay down our anchor. We decided to pick up a mooring but the thickness of the rope already indicated that it was meant for ships at least three times our seize. When we were settled the first fishing ships started to enter the harbour and picked up some moorings around us.
Against better knowledge we hoped that the ship from our mooring went out fishing for a couple of days and wouldn’t come back for the night. So we went to sleep, fully dressed.
And well, after one hour we were waken up by shouts, the sound of a very, very heavy engine, searching lights and lots of fast Portuguese which we couldn’t understand. We didn’t need to of course, their intention was clear. So we left, and finally we found a remote spot where we did put down the anchor after which we rolled in our bed and slept very peaceful through the remaining night.
