Hakkinen Outstarting Schumacher

The fate of the Formula One championship now seemed to rest with Schumacher. He was in position to hold Hakkinen to second, and if Irvine finished third or fourth, then the Driver's Title would be Irvine's and Ferrari's. However, McLaren's Coulthard was in position to block Irvine to help Hakkinen and McLaren win the Driver's Title. Tactics as well as drivers' skill and will were now going to determine Formula One Driver's and Constructor's Championship...

Mika Hakkinen threw Ferrari's blocking tactic out the window when at the starting line, he blew by Schumacher and his attempt to block him. (Note the angle of Schumi's car in the top photo) In the meantime, Irvine passed Coulthard (note his angle in the top photo as well) before the first turn to give himself a chance to attack Hakkinen on his own. Like 1998, the start was about to determine the fate of the race and the championship...
