Eddie Irvine Crashing before the Hairpin (Qualifying)

Eddie Irvine, who came to Suzuka leading the Driver's Title by 4 points from Mika Hakkinen was not in championship form during qualifying, as his driving line was erratic throughout the first session. During the second session, he pushed a bit too hard after Degner Curve and crashed right before the Hairpin, as pictured here. He got back into the pits and used the backup car for the third session, but could do no better and ended up 5th, on the third row for the race...

Former Williams driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen emerged as a driver to look out for, as he had two wins in 1999 for the Jordan Team. He was 3rd in points for the Driver's Title. Jordan/Mugen-Honda team was determined to do well at Honda's "home track," as they prepared a Suzuka Super Special engine just for this race. The efforts seemed to have paid off as Frentzen managed to beat out Ferrari's Irvine for 4th, sharing the second row with McLaren's David Coulthard for the race...
