My Mach on Ramps, Ready for Starter Replacement
I began having problems starting my Mustang as the starter would
occasionally spin without cranking the engine. I suspected the
problem to be intermittent engaging of the starter gear drive.
Old Starter Removed
The bulge you see on the top of the starter houses a plunger which
moves the gear to the right, engaging the starter. The gear did not
have any abnormal wear, so the plunger mechanism was probably the
root cause. Replacing the starter on this Mustang was really easy.
