Jan Magnussen's Car Losing the Front Wing

1999 Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca

Other contenders dropped out from contact or mechanical failure, including Jimmy Vasser - he spun out on his own coolant when Michael Andretti ran into him and ruptured the cooling system. Robby Gordon spun off the track during a caution lap, as he was one of the many drivers getting too anxious, even during Yellow. Formula One/Sports Car driver Jan Magnussen, substituting for PJ Jones, made contact at Turn 2 and lost his front wing, as pictured here.
Juan Montoya - Will Formula One be Next?

1999 Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca

Points leader Juan Montoya was blocked all day, mostly by Scott Pruett. He still managed to finish 8th, bringing him closer to the championship. Team Rahal and Herta's teammate Max Papis finished on the podium, at third, a driver to look out for next season when CART may change dramatically. Will young drivers like Montoya, Kanaan, and Franchitti take over the podium next year from the veterans like Andretti, Pruett, and Unser? What will happen to Al Unser Jr. now that he has ended his drive at Team Penske? How will the retirement of chief steward Wally Dallenbach change the sport? The answers await for the Year 2000 season...
