Because of the tragic accident ending the life of Gonzalo Rodriguez during morning practice on Saturday, CART cancelled the qualifying session for that day so the 1999 Honda Grand Prix of Monterey (Shell 300) began based on the provisional positions based on Friday's practice. That meant Bryan Herta started from pole, just like the year before.

Bryan Herta, who led from start to finish, didn't have a cakewalk. Tony Kanaan pressured Herta until he broke down on lap 44 near the Corkscrew, and Roberto Moreno pressed on until Herta put the hammer down with some quick, low 1:11 laps. The intense action was in the middle of the pack involving Scott Pruett, Jimmy Vasser, Michael Andretti, Greg Moore, and Dario Franchitti who is second in points.
