12 February 2004 Seeing the World in Sepia is in mourning. My good friend Miguel Jose P. Corcuera passed away before dawn on February 9, after a week of violent seizures in St. Luke's Hospital. He was 20 years old. Miguel was found unconscious near the College of Engineering in UP Diliman last Monday at around 9 PM. Official police reports say he might have been injured during or after a holdup inside a UP-SM North jeepney. The more popular belief is that fratmen mistook Miguel for a member of a rival fraternity. Miguel had a fractured skull, blood clots and swelling in the brain as well as bruises on his body. Miguel's remains lie at the Funeraria Nacional along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City. He will be buried on the morning of February 14 at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina. * * * I met Miguel in 1996. Although we were classmates in UPIS since day one, we didn't become close until 10th grade when I sang in his band. Miguel was a constant lunch date in college and was the one who first brought me to Likha-Diwa, a vegetarian restaurant in UP. He cheered me up without even trying when I suffered from a bout of depression in 2000-2001. (And thus made up for the time he made me cry, playing "Heaven Knows" on the keyboards in Amor's house weeks after Charles died.) He and I wrote a song ("Addicted to Heroine") together in 2001, even if it was just for a Humanities project and was about Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera. One of his dogs also happens to be named Jamie... But you didn't really have to know that. Miguel's life was filled with music till the very end. He was an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer. I introduced him to Mikki in 2001; they've been jamming ever since in an acoustic trio named Samadhi. Of course, Migs and Mikki also introduced me to another band member, Red. Miguel is survived by his wonderful family and his devoted friends from UPIS, UP, the UP Varsity Table Tennis Team and the UP Music Circle. Lastly, Miguel is survived by his girlfriend of over a year, Rexie... who, like Miguel, happens to be one of the sweetest, strongest and most beautiful persons I have ever been honored to know. We love you, Migs. Even after. |
