2009 Lifeguard Training Dates
Sign Up For A Training Class
In order to become a Milwaukee County Lifeguard, you must:

-Be a resident of Milwaukee County
-Be at least 16 years old by the start of the summer

If you meet all of the above criteria, you must then complete the following steps:

1. Attend a Free Lifeguard Training Class

Classes are offered at both Pulaski Pool (2701 S. 16th St.) and Noyes Pool (8235 W. Good Hope Rd.). Please see the
SCHEDULE for the dates and times of training classes. At these classes, you will learn the skills necessary to pass the physical performance examination.  Part of the physical performance examination is the ability to swim 100 meters in 1:45 or less. There is no need to sign up for a specific training session. Please attend the session that best fits your schedule. You will also fill out an application and other important paperwork during training classes.

NOTE: It is highly suggested that you take the training class starting March 30th. If all positions are filled, the class starting April 27 may be cancelled!

2. Pass the Milwaukee County Physical Performance Examination

Physical performance examinations are given at the conclusion of each lifeguard training sesison. Please see the
SCHEDULE for dates and times. All skills covered in the examination are covered in the training classes.

3. Attend First Responder Training

First Responder training is a 40 hour first aid course that covers CPR as well as basic first aid. There are a few opportunitites to take this class through the Milwaukee County EMS department. Information about these classes is given out at lifeguard training classes. There is a $165.00 fee associated with this course, but those who complete the summer with the Milwaukee County Parks will be paid at their hourly rate for the 40 hours they spend in the course. This payment will be made at the conclusion of the summer.

4. Pass the First Responder Examinations

There are both written and practical examinations that you must pass in order to receive your First Responder certifiicaiton. Once these are complete, you will be placed in the eligible lifeguard pool. All people who are in the eligible lifeguard pool will be guaranteed an assignment at a Milwaukee County pool or beach for the upcoming summer.
